Taurus 2010, revolvers, autos

I was in the gun shop today, looking at various things. One of the pistols I looked at was the Taurus 609. I think this is an awesome pistol. I'm doing a bit of research on it, I'm seriously considering purchasing one. They feel great in the hand. They are so well balanced, very light weight, and they really seem to want to, "stay in your hand."

Why is this company getting such a bad reputation? Lifetime warranty, very smooth feeling products, great website.

It is not "getting"

In years past they were real crap, just a step above Rossi and RG.

They HAVE gotten (way) better, but they still aren't earning ANY more of my money.
Yet....

You want 'cheap'? Buy a Ruger.

I'm not so sure Taurus or Ruger are cheap. Sure they are compared to a gun that is $1500, but the price difference between Taurus an Ruger, are not so large when compared to Glock and Sig Sauer. I'll put some more research and thought into this. However, I really like the feel of that 609. Which, imho, is not so cheap, with the shopkeeper asking me for $495.

Maybe it would be better to go out an have a look at the XDM series. I'll try and see who in my area is stocking them. BTW, I appreciate what you are saying, WESHOOT2, I am not discounting it.

Thanks

I think a LOT of Taurus buyers are first time gun owners or low-count gun owners who don't have a lot of experience to find and report problems with their guns.

They are also people who are intimidated by a 10-25% price differential between a Taurus and a Ruger in revolvers, or a Taurus and a Springfield in autos.

When a more experienced shooter (who may have a passle of guns in the safe and isn't concerned about getting "a gun" of some sort into his hands NOW) considers the price difference in terms of boxes of ammo and warranty shipping costs... he holds off the purchase until he can afford the higher quality gun that that Taurus typically tries to mimic.

That new shooter, though, he thinks he's getting a deal that allows him to get another 100-200 rounds of ammo.

It's disappointing, really. 200 rounds of ammo selling quality down the creek.

I think it's very telling if a reputed gunsmith won't accept a particular manufacturer of gun into his work schedule at all and just informs a customer to just go out and get a S&W/Ruger/Springfield instead.

I've got one Taurus - an 85 Ultra Light. No problems with it, but I've only put a couple hundred rounds through it in all the years I've owned it. Maybe I'll finally move to a state one day where I can CC it.

Why haven't I bought any more Taurus'? Too many reported of bad customer service. No personal experiance, but the stories are scary.

I've had to use S&W CS twice and Ruger CS once and was absolutely satisfied with how they handled things. I can tell by the way I was treated that both S&W and Rugar value their reputations. So I am happy to pay a little more for the added sense of security.

Now, if you really want bad CS, try Beretta. It kills me to say it because I really like their O/Us, but I am through with them.
