tannerite accident

Kids will be kids. They wonder without borders. My sympathy goes to the child and not in anyway to the Tannerite company. The stuff is dangerous and is labeled and marketed as such. As it now appears the Tannerite should have not been left laying around (mixed) and left unattended. Someone is at fault. Certainly not the child.

After thought: I don't like the stuff period!! as I've seen first hand how explosive it is when detonated. It is a product I for one would like to see removed from the market place. Whether it was Tannerite of not. Someone is still at fault.

Let's find out the real story before we draw and quarter a company that may not be (highly likely isn't) even involved, eh?

I guarantee that there's more to this story.

According to Marion County sheriff's investigators, the child was walking through the woods Tuesday afternoon when it stepped on a plastic bag containing an "exploding target."

A small amount of the explosive powders, which can be purchased at various retail stores, was left in a sandwich bag on a cinder block.

Where, oh where does anybody see "Tannerite" in any of the news reports?
Please show me any mention of not just "Tannerite" but any other brand either!

I've seen at least three different kinds of the stuff you mix. It really doesn't even mention that. It could have been anything , even homemade explosive or pop bottle bomb. They seem to think it was something for a target though like at a make shift target range. Sounds like a dangerous area either way

Reading this homeade flash powder comes to mind. Has a gray color and can be mixed with readily available chemicals. Could easily be mistaken as tannerite target by the layman.

I think, given Tannerite's web site disclaimer about homemade imitations, that Tannerite's products were not involved.

Ya pays y' money, and y' takes y' chances. Unfortunately, if you leave dangerous stuff laying around, you also take chances for others. I hope the responsible party is identified and held fully responsible.

It's inconceivable that in this day and age any company would sell a product for recreational use that is so unstable that accidentally stepping on it could cause it to explode.
I concur, if this is the case just handling it and a bit of hard squeeze could set it off. There has to be more to the story.

Right Gary, so what are these other types that are commercially available...which is what is being claimed in the article, not homemade.

I forget the names of them, but saw at gun shows and pitched that they were more for the money , easier to mix and more explosive bang.

Yep I've seen the same two guys selling "Billy-Bob & Bubba's homebrew" at gun-shows.
I don't remember the name either but they were from somewhere in WVa IIRC & the name reflected that somehow "Appalachian Chemical" or something like that.

It's got to be one heckuva impact in my experience, and then produces the ignition concurrent with the localized impact heat generated.

True dat. I've tried to set off a small amount on concrete with a hammer and couldn't do it. Maybe if I used plate steel and a 10 pound sledge and put all I've got into it it might but I seriously doubt it.
