Talk to me about CZ bolt action rimfire rifles,,,

I have a 14 year old nephew who has lately made me very proud to be associated with him,,,
I still can't believe he's turning out okay being raised by a (sob) musician.

Anyways the kid is in the Civil Air Patrol,,,
Last summer passed the basic rifle course at a CAP camp.

I think this summer I want to buy him an heirloom quality bolt-action 22 rifle,,,
I definitely want it to have iron sights so he can learn to shoot properly,,,
He can scope it later if he wants to but it's iron sights to start.

I've been looking at the CZ-USA website,,,
Two of their rifles have really caught my eye.
The 455 LUX.
The 455 FS.

If their rimfire rifles are as high quality as my CZ pistols I will be happy,,,
My real question is about the mannlicher stock.

Does the full length stock have a negative affect on the accuracy of the rifle?

It surely affects the aesthetics for me,,,
I think mannlicher stocks are the height of elegance.

And before anyone accuses me of this,,,
Yes, I am probably buying him the rifle I would have loved at his age. :D

I will appreciate your insights on this topic.

I can't speak to the mannlicher, but the trigger can be polished internally and dropped down to sub 3-pounds. There's also the Rifle Basix (SP?) trigger that is 10 oz to 2 lbs. The sights are mauser-style on the one my friend has, which I find to be the best rifle sights out there outside of a ghost ring/peep. They quality on it, from what I've seen, is great. I'm looking for one now.

Thanks Chewie,,,

The CZ-USA website says the trigger on the 455 series is adjustable,,,
Who knows exactly what that means.

Thanks for the info on the sights,,,
Quality iron sights are a priority for me.

The trigger is "adjustable" by way of a nut that relieves tension on the trigger spring. This lightens the pull considerably although you still get some small amount of creep. The trigger kits you can buy are essentially washers that shim out the creep.

The 455 is an 'update' of the 452 that features swap-able barrels and a few cost saving manufacturing steps. I honestly haven't heard anything bad about the 455 except the irons on the 452 are nicer than on the 455.

The 452 Lux has been discontinued and may be harder to find although the Trainer model should still be available. The stock may not be as nice as the Lux but it still isn't ugly by any means. The Trainer has been my favorite rifle since I bought it two years ago. Very solid and a great shooter.

To answer your question about the mannlicher stock: It shouldn't make too much difference, accuracy wise. I like the way the standard profile balances but if you like the mannlicher, by all means.

I don't own a full stock CZ, but I have read that they are as accurate as the rifles with the standard length stock.

The CZ rimfires are all very accurate...

I've owned a 452 FS for three years. Never a bit of trouble with it. Very accurate, darn near as accurate as my heavy barrel target rifle.
I have heard that the FS 452s are getting a bit hard to find.

I really like my plain CZ 455 American

I'm not capable of approaching its limits, but sometimes when I put it all together and that tiny paster blooms so far away...

no iron sights on the American, though. From the name, they should ship it with a barcalounger.

Anyway, it's a fine, fine rifle. When I think "heirloom" I translate as "needlessly expensive, but thanks!" and these are pretty reasonable.

I'm not helping any, just thought I'd pointlessly chime in. czcustom.com has some variations you might be interested in. My daughter is drawn mostly to pistols or I'd pick up a left handed 452 for her.

Thanks for your input Gentlemen,,,

I spoke with my Brother last night,,,
He's saying not to spend too much money on a rifle.

I asked him why and he said it's like buying a kid a guitar,,,
You don't buy a custom Fender Stratocaster for a kids first six-string,,,
It's better to get him a nice Peavey or Yamaha to determine if they will stay interested.

He said he was all for me getting Gabe a .22 bolt-action rifle for this summer,,,
But he would feel a whole lot better if I didn't spend too much money,,,
He was pretty adamant about his view so I'll probably respect it.

It's his kid after all,,,
I'm just the doting uncle. ;)

So now I'm on the fence about this purchase,,,
Maybe I'll just buy the CZ for myself,,,
And give Gabe my Henry Accubolt.

That would be a win-win if I've ever seen one. :D

I got a CZ 452 Military Trainer model for about $400, and that was at Gander Mountain's inflated prices. It's a fantastic rifle with the best iron sights I've seen on any rimfire.

It's great you want to pass along your passion for shooting to your nephew. Get him a Rem. 582 or 581, Marlin 782-881 now and buy the FS 452 for your self. Take him shooting ofter and let him know how much the time with him and the CZ means to you. 40 years from now he'll pass it on and think of his great ole unk! Man it don't get better than that!

O-Kay,,, It's settled,,,,,

The nephew gets my very slightly used Henry Accubolt,,,
With a case, muffs, complete cleaning kit, and 1,000 rounds of ammo.

I get to buy myself a new CZ rifle of some sort. :D

I went there at noon and I've got the Evil Pawn Shop Guy looking,,,
I told him to find me a CZ-452 Special Military Trainer.

If he isn't able to find one of the 452 trainers,,,
We did locate a distributor who has a few of the 455 FS models,,,
I would rather have the 24" barrel of the trainer but will be okay with a 20" Mannlicher.

The Henry Accubolt is an extremely accurate rifle,,,
My 60 year old eyes can't do it at all anymore,,,
The gun itself does 1.5" at 100 yard distance.

I just never liked that danged synthetic stock,,,
So I'm happy to pass it on to my nephew.

And it ain't like I'm cheaping out on him,,,
Three years ago the Accubolt cost me $399.00.

Oops!,,,
(05 March) I fibbed,,,
It cost me $319.00 plus tax.

WooHoo,,,
New Rifle Fever!

Only CZ bolt action 22lr we have is my son's CZ 452 Scout. He loves it, even being left handed, and it works well. High quality rifle. Shown with cheap Tasco red dot, (he insisted), and optional 10 round mag.

^^^ He looks happy,,,

The red dot does look a bit odd on top of that bolt gun,,,
But what the heck, if he likes it and hits with it,,,
The thing is serving it's purpose.

Thanks for posting that pic,,,
It helps put the size of the rifle in perspective.

Aarond

P.S. There's a left-handed 452 LUX at Buds right now.

cz is the way to go. i had a trainer--terrific! sold it and bought a cz452 varmint 22lr--also terrific. i installed a rimfire tech adj. sear on the varmint--incredible! unfortunately, i recently moved to sc and have no place to shoot-no outdoor facilities close by, so i have been divesting myself of some of my range pieces-and the cz is going. :(

sold my scope and the rifle will be on gb next week--ugh!!!

most memorable moment-when my son was at the range and saw a fly on the target at 50yds. took the shot--no more fly.;)

regrets--but life goes on.:)

I owned a 452 Lux for a few years. Nothing but an Annie will out
shoot it. Fit and finish are pretty good. The trigger guard looks like
it was made in a Kenmore washer and dryer factory but it is steel (eh).

You raise the full stock issue. If I was looking for a rimfire rifle to give
to a kid for "keeps", ?? is there really keeps anymore?-- I'd seriously
consider a full stock CZ452 (that's 452). What a fine looking European
influenced firearm. Obviously, you like nice wood and I like nice wood--
the CZ452 can often have nicely figured stock. Search.

Problem-- the kid might prefer something in synthetic that he can use
as a boat paddle in the morning going out to the duck blind.

Anyone interested in CZ rimfires should check out www.rimfirecentral.com.

I always wanted a top quality .22 bolt rifle (anyone remember when the original Kimbers came out?) but could not afford it. When my daughters got old enough to shoot I decided that I wanted them to start with a bolt rifle instead of my 10/22. Ended up on rimfirecentral and learned about CZs. I knew they made pistols but was not familiar with their rifles. Well, they have a huge following on rimfirecentral so I went to CZ-USA's website and looked at the models with iron sights. When I saw the FS model that was it.

The CZ shoots really well and it looks great too. I recommend it highly.

For a young shooter check out the Scout.
