Talk me out of it.

So I own a glock 19, went to the range with my lady friend and shot her new glock 42, i love it. So much so that I want one, enough to trade off the 19 even. I feel it's leaps and bounds better for carry, only thing is low capacity, though it really isn't an issue in smalltown USA where I now call home. I've been debating whether to get a g43 or g42. The 42 allows us to share magazines but then I've got the less powerful round, the .380. I have a split opinion on this. The less penetration, the less likely you jave a stray round pass through your target and hit an innocent bystander. But more power is great for things like glass etc. This is a tricky one for me... there's always waiting until after tax season.

If you're a resident, a private sale in NC is easy (as long as the buyer has a concealed carry permit or pistol purchase permit) and you'll probably end up big $$$ ahead that way.

Trading with any gunshop is typically a losing proposition. And don't buy a gun because you can share magazines with a friend. Mags typically don't get shared...

If you like the 42 or 43 get what suits you best. But be sure to shoot the 43 before you decide. (Some ranges will have one you can rent -- or maybe someone here from the Asheville area will let you shoot his or hers.)

I have two rules regarding gun purchases;
1. spend only the money you can afford.
2. never sell or trade a gun for another one.

There are reasons for this but the biggest is seller's remorse. If you start trading or selling one gun for another then you will always have one gun. Buy when you can afford it and research before you buy.

Big drop in capability from 15 rounds of 9 mm to 6 rounds of .380. Do you carry the G19 and conceal it OK? I can see adding the G42 if it is to be a pocket pistol, because there are some occasions when pocket carry is the easiest way to have a pistol on you, but personally I wouldn't replace the G19 with the G42 if the G19 is working for you.

You must be a superior judge of gun metal -- and far better at it than many of us. How many different guns have you bought over the years?

I've bought a lot of guns over the past 30 years, and not all of them suited me. But I didn't know that until I had used them for a while. You've apparently NEVER had that problem. Or if you did, the troublesome weapons just became SAFE QUEENS that never get shot.

Guns are NOT religious icons. Guns are tools, intended for use. I'd rather sell one that doesn't suit me and use the money to find one that suits me better.

RE: seller's remorse. The only gun's I've sold that I really regret selling were three that I sold when I HAD to buy a second car and didn't want to go into debt: a Sig P210-6, a S&W 52-2, and a collectible Mauser P-08 from WWII. The proceeds from those sales plus some out of savings, kept me from going into debt, and I drove that used pickup for 7 years... Guns CAN BE a good source of cash, when you need it.

I kind of regret selling my CZ-40B, but I've since found two .40s that I like as well, or better. (And a bunch of .40s that I didn't like as well.)

I'm not the expert here, but even I know these 2 Glocks are not even close to being similar.
I have no trouble carrying the G19 & the smaller lighter Glocks are no pleasure cruise to shoot IMHO. Maybe because I'm an OF & the 19 is easier on these old hands.

if you can buy them both, go for it. And always remember, " Don't share Magazines! "LOL.

Walt, lady friend as in serious girlfriend, so mag sharing already happens with our rifles.
TailGator, I CC the 19 ok for the most part, but I've never needed the capacity. When I lived in Ft Lauderdale I liked the capacity though.
So far I'm thinking I'll just wait it out.

At the range I can understand sharing, but not for carry weapons.

But I will agree that it's nice to have a serious girlriend who shares your enthusiasm for shooting.

Range work is the only time we'd need to share I suppose. My main thing is i feel I'd carry the smaller gun more, and any bullet beats being unarmed or having it in the car. And oh yeah Walt, being a shooting couple is awesome. It makes range days quality time and gives me someone to bounce ideas off of.

I sincerely hope you never need any pistol of any capacity. But I would still add the G42 rather than replacing, even if it means saving for a while. I think you have a quite capable handgun in the G19, and it is going to be good for home defense even if you start carrying the G42 regularly. Your nickle, though, my friend. And congrats on having a companion who shares your interest. Might be a keeper, that one.

As stated earlier. Never sell off or trade off one of your shooters. Save up for the new one. One can never have to many guns. I would go with the single stack 9. These seem to be the hot ticket right now. I am getting ready to order 2 of them for resell. I personally would never own a glock but that's just me.;)

I wish I got a tax refund, first of all.

Anyways, back to your question. I would never go from a 9 mm to a 380. If you want an easy gun to conceal, get a S&W Shield in 9 mm since it has one more round than a Glock 43. Next, I'd never get rid of a 19 for a 43 or 42. Save your money and just buy it.

The 19 is such a good all around firearm. I wouldn't get rid of something that is good at everything for something that excels at one thing. Like mentioned numerous times in this thread, save up for the 42 but I would get some range time with the 43 before pulling the trigger on a 42.

G 19's are great but so are G 42's....ya have no problem ( other than cash flow maybe) buy the G 42 and lots of ammo, tell the girlfriend TV dinners are on the menu until the pistol is paid for. Chances are she will see your wisdom and pay for the marriage license out of her pocket :)5

While the Glock 42 is great, think about how you will be carrying it.....in a pocket holster or IWB....IMO, you could find a better fit for CCW like an XDS 9 or a Kahr CW380. Both have inherently safer triggers, IMO.

I'll be the contrarian here....

As someone who is selling a G19-type pistol (SD9VE) because I prefer smaller carry guns, I support selling your G19 for a gun you prefer. The G19 is a good gun, but it's not the best thing out there. And capacity isn't the most important factor. What good is more rounds if you don't have the time or skill to use them?

Get what you want.

P.S. I'm selling the SD9VE to fund getting a SP-101 3". I already have a LC9 that is my favorite carry pistol. You should try one before buying the G43.
