Talk me out of it

Now that I'm more comfortable reloading, I've been looking at AR style rifles. Dear God, I want one.

Please, help a brother out. Talk me out of an AR!

And at the very least, if you cant do that, do you have a suggestion for bang for the buck (ha ha a pun)

go for a Colt 6721 if you want the best !! (flame retardant activated)

i personally like it because of it's heavy straight barrel and capable of handling optics, my favorite for this is the Trijicon TA-31 A.C.O.G.

As a reloader, I can't talk myself INTO one.

I already have a few 22-250Rem bolt guns....

They fling precious brass into no mans land....

I dont need one for home protection....

I dont need one to be cool....

Maybe if I start shooting service rifle matches I'll get one.

Don't do it!

You'll like it so much that you'll crave more AR-15s in other calibers and configurations. Its the road to the poorhouse, I tell you. ;)

Road to the poor house indeed. Once you get one AR you're going to want more... having multiple uppers won't be enough. You're going to want a lower for each upper and soon you've got a gun safe full of ARs.

Then there's getting ammo for each caliber you can shoot now... and we're not even talking about the AR type rifles that can be chambered in .308, .243 and .270 and more.

Oh and Zach - there's a neat little thing called a shell catcher that can velcro onto an AR. It'll catch all your brass so you don't have to go digging around for it. Most will have a zip open bottom - I leave it unzipped and have it dangling over a 5 gallon bucket for range trips. All my brass ends up either in the bucket (about 90% of them) or on the table right next to me (the remaining 10%). The shell catchers cost anywhere from $15 to $40. You could also make your own for less.

Talk you out of it?

You have other guns?

They can't handle all the poodles you might have attacking you all at once?

What?!?! They are pack animals! There might easily be a dozen or more, all at once! Vicious, possibly rabid, vampire zombie poodles! Better get some spare mags, too! And some MOLLE crap to hang them on .....

Sorry man. The bug has bit you and now it's just a matter of time. You'll have one by the end of summer...probably sooner.

P.S. I love mine!

I can't talk you out of it... Just not possible...:D

But if you are looking for the best bang for your buck, check out Spike's Tactical and Palmetto State Armory. Great quality and great prices.

AR-15

Don't waste your money on a name (Colt). Rock River Arms, DPSM, Bushmaster are all very nice and built to Military Spec +. They supply the military with their M4 rifles, not Colt. The guys I work with that used Colts in Iraq did not like them or trust them. I had one of the lightweight Sporters and you were fine as long as you cleaned that sucker after every firing. All the AR series rifles are lioke that from the cheapest to the most expensive.

If you really want a AR style rifle that you can depend on, spend the extra money and get a piston gas system but be ready to shell out around $1200.00 or better for a gas system rifle.

Spend the money and buy a H&K 416 or 417 or one of the nicer models lke a REPR!
:D

What do you mean by most bang for the buck?

If the least expensive, but still reasonably accurate, consider building one. Look at Shotgun News this week. Fortier builds one for just under $500. Its not that hard!

If you want an assembled rifle, there are plenty of names to consider, aligned in a tiered, price and option driven format.

What I recommend to anyone considering the AR is to sit down with a blank piece of paper and list what you want it to do. Then let that list drive the options you get. If you just walk in and begin looking around, everything will amaze you and there are a dizzying amount of options!

Wow. You are 100% wrong on every single thing you said in here.

as a military armorer for the last 4 years we are still getting our M4s from colt
direct gas guns run just fine, if you want the piston driven get it but you really dont need it and as a word of advice in my opinion (gained from 4 years active duty and two combat deplyoments) the acog sucks. the reticle is to busy making it a pain to use, and ive replaced to many due to floating reticles stipped windage knobs and shatterd prisms to ever trust them, aimpoints eotechs and just a plain old leupold held up much better, besides do you really need to spend 1200 bucks on a scope thats as limited as an acog? a150 dollar redfield 3x9 has a lot more versatility.

Holy cow. Do NOT heed this post. Colt and Fabrique Nationale Herstal of Belgium provide the military's M4s and M16s, respectively.

Bushies, RRA, and DPMS are most decidedly NOT mil-spec rifles, even though they can be fine shooters.

Colt. Daniel Defense. Noveske. LMT. Those are a few actual mil-spec guns.

Nor is a piston more inherently reliable than a properly maintained DI, in almost any circumstances.

I don't expect you or anyone else to know everything. I'm still very much a rifle baby, learning my AR, but don't just make stuff up.

I'm far from an authority on the AR platform, but even I got a kick out of how wrong a post could be, and spoken with authority too!
OP, I think you'll find all the piston guns much more expensive than $1200. Look at DI guns from BCM or S&W for good bang for the buck. Don't be afraid to get complete uppers and lowers seperately in order to get the options you want. Expect to spent about a grand for a quality rifle.
