Talk me in to getting a 1911

May I suggest that you focus your efforts on the SIG P220 series. While I enjoy shooting a top-quality 1911 pistol, the SIG seems to be kilometers ahead in terms of function, fit, finish, style, ease of use, etc. And the bloody SIGS just work!

I used to own a P220. It was a nice gun, but it never fit my hand very well. It also was larger than a Lwt. Commander which I had at the time, so I decided to sell the SIG. I might also mention the SIG was a bit fussy about some brands of ammo, most notably CCI 230 grain FMJ Blazers. Both it and my Series 80 Government didn't always like to feed them reliably.

Of course, with the 1911 it was naturally the fault of the gun, but with the SIG it was the fault of the ammo. Right? ;)

What ATTICUS said...

I will confess up front to limited 1911 experience. However, I picked up a NIB "Loaded" Springfield for just under $500 last April, and I've decided I want to get real experienced. This one is my first, and I love it as much as a man should love an inanimate object. Like the little girl said, it's j-u-u-u-st right.

I'd fired several Colts, a couple Springfields, and had actually settled on a Kimber until I stumbled across the Springfield at a gun show. I found the Springfield more than met my humble requirements and was considerably less expensive than I'd budgeted for the purchase.

I've little doubt you'd be happy with any or all. As a 1911 acolyte, I say: JUST DO IT!

Welcome aboard! :)

IMHO, any firearm you acquire after you've already secured your home/personal defense gun should only be considered a "want" item, not a "need". Considering that premise, it seems you're intent on building a collection. I would suggest that you buy the best of whatever make you desire, be it polymer or 1911 and nobody can stop you. You could also consider buying a handsome cabinet to put those in and impress your visitors. It's your money!

Just my $0,000.02.

1911s are:
Classic
Rugged
Reliable
Accurate
Slim
Ergonomic
And oh so "customizable" should you later decide to do so.

IMHO So is the Model T Ford.

I like the Sig, which is like the BMW of the pistol world.

I like the Sig, which is like the BMW of the pistol world.

Ain't that the truth. I have a non-gun owning co-worker who thinks he knows everything, and one day when the subject came to guns he was telling everybody how the SIG is the best handgun bar none. I asked him how many he's owned. He shot one at a rental range once, he said.

Actually, I checked on a new SIG P220 today just to see if I should put one back into my collection. Gawd, who the hell came up with those hard plastic pebbled grips? The thing wanted to slip out of my hand like a bar of soap! My old P220 had sharply checkered plastic grips, which actually did the job they were intended to do.

I have a Kimber Stainless Gold Match.

I'm almost to 1000 rounds since bought it six months ago. I had just one failure to feed in my first box full of Wichester "Range" ammo. All the rest are lead SWC reloads. These should have more trouble than hardball but I've not had a single problem.

I had a 60lb 8yr old girl fire off 10rds and she did fine and so did the gun. She even hit the target once at 25yds.

Picking a pistol is like picking that special woman to be your wife, you want it to be right, reliable, dependable, and something you'll be with for the rest of your life.

But pistols don't get mad when you shoot other pistols. :D

I'm tired of trying to convince...

I'm tired of trying to convince people to buy this gun or that. Pick the gun that you shoot the best. For myself, it is the 1911. For the FBI HRT, it is the 1911. For people like Larry Vickers, Clint Smith, Rob Leatham, Col. Cooper, it is the 1911. If it's outdated, why don't you break the news to them.

And all of this garbage about reliability is making me sick. I've never owned a 1911 that didn't perform well "out of the box". Fact is, my 1911s never hiccough. But then again, I don't buy cheap crap. I doubt Glock, HK, Sig, fill in the blank can beat perfect.

So there...

1911

I have never been a big 1911 fan and didn't even consider buying one untill three weeks ago.
A good freind recently purcased a Les Baer Thunder ranch special and he brought it with when he came to visit. Let me tell you after about 25 rounds thru it I was shooting 4 in grouping at 40 yards! and Im not that great of a shooter.

Now I have been a die hard Hk fan for years and would swear by my usp 40 but as much as I hate to say it I have been converted.

I do realize that Les Baer firearms are a little out of your price range (mine to) but I do think that this is a prime example of what a 1911 has the capability of. Me personaly I think I am going to start looking for a decent 1911 and when I can aford it have it tweeked a little at a time , I shure wish I could afford that Les Baer.

P.S. great site guys I realy enjoy it.

I dont wanna brag around but we did many under 4 inch (five shot) groups with the HK P7, USP9F, SIG P226 from 50 meters without gun rest or any kind of shooting support. Factory guns, no custom work, open sights, factory FMJ ammo.

There is no need for an overcustomized, oversensitive and extremely overpriced 1911 for this kind of accuracy...

HEY ORANGE TJ:GUNNUTS HERE,DON'T DO IT!!!There like potatoechips! You can't stop at one,My first one was 2 1/2 years ago I now own 6,And You start out at $700.00 or $800.00 before you know it your ordering Rock River's and Wilson's,and sucking up every COLT XS model you can find.

Whoever said a 1911A1 (GI pistol) is ergonomic needs to look up the word in a dictionary. What it is is hard hitting and reliable. Ergonomic it's not.

TRUE STORY

Had absolutely NO interest in a 1911. But.

Won a 45 slide, so I had to buy a BarSto, had to have a custom-serialized Caspian frame, Ed Brown/Nowlin/McCormick/Wolff/EGW/Ahrends/BoMar/Caspian/Mag-Pack/Clark parts, NP3'ed, and suddenly I got this 1911 with a TON of money in.

And you know what?

I shoot it extremely well, 'cause it points better than any other gun I hold.

Weird, huh?

And you know what else?

This gun has had a considerable amount of ammo through it (thousands) of all power ranges (mostly IPSC Major, although it's had 400 CorBon too), and at the last match I used it for I finally had a jam (friggin foreign-spec case with friggin wacked rim dimension that got into my brass from a buddy).

One jam.

Thousands of shots (including test ammo of entire power spectrum).

Kimber. Springfield. Colt. Baer. Nowlin. STI. Ed Brown. Rock River.
Nice to have choices.
Buy one.

Why a 1911:

Great trigger with clean, positive break 2-5 lbs depending on YOUR choice, and FAST reset

points well

Great trigger

Inexpensive mags

Great trigger

Capable of revolver-level accuracy

Great trigger

.45 is a wonderful round for reloading, and is inherently accurate

Great trigger

You catch my drift. I don't like the classic 1911 bbl lockup arrangement and I think the grip safety is superfluous, but its the only production .45 you can buy that has a trigger that can match a tuned revolver.

The 1911A1 is probably the most versitile pistol ever built. Period
You can spend BIG bucks on one that is absolutly untouchable or you can get them for next to nothing. It's all up to you.
Personally, I bought one new and really cheap, with the intent of customizing it. It shoots not bad in stock form, but with a better bushing, adjustable sights, trigger job and aftermaket recoil guide rod/ spring it should be a top performer- For a lot less money than a basic Kimber or Springfield.
If you have access to one, Fire it. See if it's what you like. If not then you will know. They make lots of noise and spit big bullets... What could be better?:)

1911

kimber ultra carry has been my ccw pistol for over 2 yrs.wouldn't trade it for any amount of money.i own 2 colts(1991,cco)that i feel the same way about.wilson mags and wilson ultra thin grips are a must!
