Taking the mildly anti girlfriend to the range(1st time). suggestions?

As was said in previous posts, a cap with a bill in front, a shirt that buttons at the neck, ear-plugs and muffs and of course glasses. Call the range and find out when they are least busy. Stay as far away from the .44's as possible, best if they are not there. No more than 1/2 hour at first. If you go to something heavier than a .22 get her a pair of shooting gloves.

Here's what you do. Go first. Shoot at about 20 feet.

Then let her shoot. Move the target up closer. My gf is the same way, and when she was shooting 2" clusters, she was happy. That's what is going to get them hooked. And yes, wear both foam and muffs, that will help.

I would agree with start with a wheel gun. Maybe a medium frame .38 with mild loads.

I once had a girlfriend that was an anti, she thought guns were dangerous and people shouldn't have them in there homes. The only reason she "put up with" me having them was because I was an LEO. I offered to take her shooting and teach her gun safety but she didn't go for it. This tipped me off to her liberal tendicies, she proved this when she said she thought Clinton was one of the greates presidents we ever had. Needless to say she is gone and the above was a BIG reason. Now I am married and my wife (who is a former LEO) thinks people who DO NOT HAVE guns are lunatics. Your girlfriend agreeing to go to the range is a good sign.

Just a thought... if you are going to an indoor range, you might want to try to coordinate it so you are there when the least amount of people are present. I took my girlfriend shooting for the first time and the most uncomfortable thing for her were the unexpected blasts going off nearby.

The fewer people, the smoother it will go.

I'll add a bit to the flood. I suggest maximizing success by using targets that have visible results like full milkjugs and aluminum cans. Bring something else to shoot that might end up being something she would buy herself like a 9mm or a mid-sized 38 revolver. I'd also give her a stab at a 20ga or .410 shotgun. It seems like more women than men are shooting in competative shooting events these days.

Clead, you also said she was mildly anti? I'd really suggest you stay away from the politics completely. By separating the shooting and the politics, it will give her the impression that she is making up her own mind. Buying a gun on her own might be the next and last step in her retraining. DON'T PUSH HER into changing her views, it comes naturally. My wife's first guns she fired were a 9mm first and then a Ruger 10/22. The next week, we went out and fired a 20ga which she liked more because she could "hit stuff" better with it.

John Browning made us equal.

Without Browning, we might not know about the other two...

Coronach touched on this but I will add just a bit to it. I have a work friend who is extreamly anti... but she went to the range a few days ago. And she had a blast. The key for her is taking anything to do with "killing" out of it. If the range supplys torso targets, ask for a standard bullseye. My first wife FREAKED at shooting at a torso and never returned to the range.

My friend the anti is actually going back to try a full auto session in a few weeks. She sees the fun now. It hasn't changed her anti sentiments ....yet... (She thinks I should leave them all at the range..sigh) But we win these battles a little bit at a time.

Best of luck to you.

Try closed footwear, full ear protection, CO2 air-rifle or pistol first, closed top blouse for S/Autos(hot cases leave a nasty burn in some bigger cleavages), don safety glasses and make it just YOU... not in conjunction with 5 of your buddies breathing beer, leers and tobacco breath/B.O. all over her (etc)!!
Then she might come back and potentially females are excellent shots and hunters(Diana was godess of hunting, clean water and easy childbirth!!)
Some people are just plain UNsuited to guns. If they are -nothing will ever be OK, so don't force anything on anybody -IMHO.Maybe try a licenced instructor course then -forget it!

My wife is a confirmed non-shooter - period.
I know ...she knows...we all know she is a real hazard and she watches "shoot'em up" TV violence programes.(I can't).

The children are OK though and shoot well and more importantly - safely .

One is even interested in hunting small pests already... :)so all is not lost :)

Well guys we went to the range today. Just so it's clear, it was an outdoor, paper-targets-only(no man-targets allowed either) range. There were other shooters shooting everything from .22s to big-bore bolt actions, and she didn't mind the noise. We were both shooting at the 15 yard line, and she outshot me!(In my own defense I'm a relatively new shooter myself.) Started with the single shot .22 rifle and went to the MkII after that. She shot 3 inch groups with the rifle and stayed on the paper with the MkII. I am happy as can be that she did this well, and I told her that several times :D She says it was more fun than she thought it would be, and she'll go again in the future. One small problem(or is it one?) was that she didn't like shooting beside me when I was firing the P89 and did NOT want to try it. She didn't like the "feel" of the report even standing beside it. That's OK, and I told her about all the fun things like silhouette(sp) shooting that she can participate in if .22s are all she wants to shoot. Not one safety problem, very good muzzle direction control. All-in-all much better than I had hoped for. Thanks for the help guys. Next time I'll bring the 10/22 and the SKS, but I'm doubtful she'll like the SKS if she didn't like the P89. It's worth a try.
Thanks again,
Clead.

Standing close beside someone shooting a larger caliber handgun is a "shock" to a newbe. The shock wave can be disturbing. Have her shoot a larger caliber before you do. Good show. Keep it up.

Took my semi-anti girlfriend to the range with me yesterday for the second time, the last being a couple years ago. She thinks guns are fine and encouraged me to get my carry permit but has a problem with my growing collection, the whole gun-nut stereotype and all....

Both times I went over all the basics: range etiquette, muzzle safety, treat all guns as if they are loaded, keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to fire, etc....

The first time we went she forgot all the rules - when she'd have a good shot she'd swing around unconsious of where the muzzle was pointed, she'd plant her finger on the trigger before even raising it to the target, etc.... I got so flustered and strict that she went back to the truck and refused to shoot anymore, though she did admit that she liked shooting my 10/22 and an old Remington 22lr bolt rifle.

I just added 3 more items to my collection in the past week or so; an NAA 22lr/magnum combo, Mossberg 500 Marauder, and a full auto Uzi. All day long before getting to the range we went over the rules, again and again, until I felt she had them learned. She was PERFECT with range etiquette and muzzle safety but I had to warn that I would rip her finger off if she continued putting it on the trigger (gotta figure out a way to break her from that habit, duct tape maybe?) Anyway, she was very angry with me for getting the Uzi but once she fired it she started giggling (yes!) and though neither of us could hit a barn with the NAA she liked it as well. I didn't allow her to shoot the shotgun, it was all I could stand to shoot 6 shells in it myself (gotta take some gloves next time). Then I pulled out my AR-15 and USP 45.... She didn't like the AR, said it was too heavy for her, and after explaining the difference between the 9mm's she'd shot before and my 45 I put a single round in the USP and let her give it a shot. Ladies and gentlemen, this dainty flower hit the target dead center first shot with the 45, though she forgot the part about leaning forward slightly while holding on tight, and the kick just about knocked her off her feet. She refused to shoot the 45 again but the first thing she did when I got her home was to call her brothers and father to tell them about her day with the Uzi and that she outshot me with my own 45!

Now the best part - on the way home from the range she asked me the question she has aked me so many times before, one which I never felt I was able to give an acceptable answer for. That question being: "Why do you like guns so much, why can't you collect stamps or something 'normal' like that?" I asked her to remember how she felt when she put the Uzi on full auto, the thrill when she got the bullseye with the 45, and the eagerness she had to call all the MEN in her family to tell them about her day at the range. I told her those were the same feelings I get everytime I go shooting I get the same rush that she got that day. She got quiet for a minute or two and just nodded her head.

She still doesn't like my "hobby" but she's now considering taking a handgun training class if I buy her a pistol.

One step closer friends, one step closer.

Now all I have to do is get her to joing the NRA and Libertarian Party.
