Sweet Jesus, help me pick a gun

I am having a terrible time trying pick out my first handgun...

Here is what I would like;

a full size 9mm that is ultra-reliable and well made

has hi-cap mags available

has good customer service behind it and plenty of available parts

doesn't need to be concealable, because I don't plan to carry it

I grew up with guns around the house and I've shot a Gov't Model .45 and a Taurus 92 9mm quite a bit in the distant past (up to about ten years ago). I have a one-on-one "beginning handgun" class scheduled on Monday with a good instuctor (I got to watch one of his classes last week). I just would like to narrow it down to one gun so I can buy something and start becoming proficient with it.

The guns on my current short list are;

Glock 17
Sig 226
Browning HP
Beretta 92
HK P7M13
HK USP

Anything I should add or take away based on my listed criteria?

I need help....lots of help

-Bill

SIG 226. Then again, I might be a bit biased.

You may want to consider the SIG 228 as well, or the 229 in 9mm. The 229 often gets overlooked in 9mm because it comes in the larger .40 and .357, but in 9mm it is a very accurate gun that has virtually no recoil.

The 226 and 228 have "hi-cap" mags readily available (if you're willing to pay for them). The 15-round 226 mags are a bit cheaper than the 228 13-round mags.

YMMV

Not to sound completely ignorant, but what is the difference between the 226/228/229?

Although I guess I could just go look at the Sig website....

:)

For dependability & inexpensive high capacity magazines the Ruger B89 is great. It points great & its weight helps recoil & they are very customer service oriented, although so well made you should never need them. Mine shoots it all without fail.

Everyone of those guns is a fine firearm. G17 has the largest capacity if that's important to you. I would rent them all at a local range, if possible, and pick the one that works the best for you. I enjoyed shooting my Beretta 96 (.40), and my G17 fits very well in my hand. I also like to shoot my wife's P228. I don't know much about the BHP, and I've never shot a P7M13, but they enjoy excellent reputations.

I think for capacity, durability, simplicity, and good customer service, the G17 is the pick of the litter.

Another vote to add a CZ-75 to the list. Another plus for the CZ is that the magazines are cheaper than the Beretta.
For my first handgun the final three were the Beretta 92FS, Browning Hi-Power, and CZ-75. Now that I've tried them all I can say that you will not go wrong with any of them.
The H&K and Sig are great guns, but might be more than you want to pay for your first gun.

Nice one, Reverend. Hell of alot of info in 4 little lines.

The good news, Bill, is you're at the fun stage! Those pistols on your list are all winners. Now all you need to do is go out and rent/shoot every one of them and then take a deep breath and plunk down the cash on your favorite. The differences between those weapons are more personal than they are anything else.

Ok, I'll add a CZ 75 to my short list. And I think a Walther P99 also. But are these two guns really as reliable as a Sig 226 or Glock 17?

I've seen the Ruger, and it's so ugly....well, if it was a dog I'd have it put to sleep. :)

How much does an HK USP full size 9mm generally cost? Hi-caps?

Thanks a ton for the quick reponses, guys!

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Beretta. The 92 Series pistols are pretty much THE most reliable 9mms on the planet. Hi-cap mags are also very easy to find at good prices as well.

The only real downside to the Beretta is that it's a bit large for the caliber, but you did say that size isn't important.

You forgot to say "amen." I'm pretty sure protocol requires you to say "amen" at the end of a prayer to The Lord, or it doesn't count.:p

Beretta 92. 15rd hi-caps used $30 or less.

On the other hand if money is no object, I've heard the HK P7M13 is a verrrrry nice gun. Just a little out of my price range.

Glock 17's a bit big in the hand. Maybe a Glock 19, concealable and hi-caps available. But, expensive mags.

For a shooter the Beretta 92. For concealed carry and a shooter Glock 19.

Good luck, hard choice.

So many guns, Sooo little cash...:(

Based on whats been said, I'd say either the CZ75 or the BHP.

So be it.....;)

(So I've often wondered what will happen to the gun market when Jesus comes back for his 1000 year reign?)

WWJP?

For the love of God, man, if you can afford the P7M13 on your list, by all means, get it. It stands head and shoulders above the others on your list.

Now this is not so much an admonishment of the other weapons as it is a compliment for the P7 series. I recently acquired my first P7, and it is outstanding.

Why can't all guns be P7's?

Thats a pretty nice list you have there, and none of the guns on it are bad.

I can't fault anything on your short list, nor the recommendation that you also consider the CZ-75.

My advice would also be to head to the range and rent/borrow as many of them as possible. There's a definite difference in feel to all of the firearms you listed, and one or two of them will just fit your hand better than the others.
