SWAT team bulks up with armor

This thing is probably a V150, so it's a toy. Cal 50 or decent steel core from a 30-06 or better still M993 7.62 tungsten core AP will turn it into a collander. Or failing that, a couple of Molotovs and you get to hear the screams of burning men( and maybe copchicks too)and get to smell burned pork (not a cop joke, what it smells like) The cops need to realize that they are not military, the military needs to learn (actually the politicians need to learn) that we're not cops. This toy would last 15 seconds vs trained grunts. And criminals tend to be idiots. So what do they need it for? Semper Fi...Ken

Hey, guys if I remember right there are a load of M8 Greyhounds still around maybe your local police force will get a turreted "rescue vehicle".

And for the true SWAT team the Russians have a BOAT LOAD of T-55 T-62 etc. ready willing and able FOB your town.

All comedy aside there may be a few situations that need this type of vehicle, but a retrofitted suburban would be just as good and a LOT less conspicous(sp) with a lot less parts replacment problems.

I live in Finland, and when the LE needs an armored vehicle here they loan a Sisu XA-180 wheeled APC from the nearest military base. Totally normal here, happens maybe once a year. The procedure is made simple so the LE gets one within hours and there is no need for police to buy own armored vehicles. Don't know if that could work in the USA.

Mikul, this increase in firepower is a myth. The LA Bank robbers were using 40s and 50s technology that had been in this country since at least 1970, maybe 76 for the 91 but the AK very old stuff (based on reich technology). The fire power has for all practical purposes been there all along, I agree that its not commonly used but just a decent "Rifle Cal 30" Would have stopped that mess, but no, "were gonna just us 9's", "cause that sounds cool".
My high grade 300 Win mag BAR with a couple 180 Noslers would have ended both those scumbags quick fast!

ok, ok, this armored vehicle is going to be used to kill innocent citizens, take all thier personal freedoms away, and all thier beloved weapons.

There now.... don't all of you feel better now that the REAL reason the SDPD bought this vehicle and wasted all our hard earned taxpayer dollars..

Did you guys even read the initial post?

What does aquired at no cost mean to you? To me it means free. Then they stated the repairs would be paid for by the police assoc. NOT the tax payers. You guys have a lot of things you could bitch about. This is not one of them. The people that are complaining are the same ones that bitch when the police are too slow to respond or when they don't have the tools to do the job right.

Join your local police department. Doing the impossible for the ungrateful.

Lets focus our energy or the real issues. Police officers (for the most part) are on our side. Stick to the anti's.

AAAH! The USAF Peacekeeper. This armore vehicle was a primary vehicle to use for convoys of nukes, whether it was missles out and back from the silos, or nuclear weapons for the B-52's. As an USAF SP you were trained to tactically deploy and so forth from this vehicle. It is by no means a vehicle that can be used in high speed situations or long drives, it does have its limits due to its weight. I live in Allentown, PA and we also have one of these surplus vehicles. Up until they got it our E.R.T. (Emergency Response Team) would use one of the city's front end payloaders with a steel plate chained to the bucket, the officers would stand inside the bucket behind the plate and another officer would drive them up to the front door if the situaton required it. Believe me deploying from a PK is easier than a front end loader.

What does aquired at no cost mean to you?

DannyO, haven't you heard TANSTAAFL? *Someone* is paying for this beast, and you can damn sure bet they'll spread the cost around as much as possible.

(FFWD to next spring...)
"Commissioner, the new Urban Assault Vehicle is great, but repair costs on it are unexpectedly high. We can't squeeze any more out of our ops budget for it."

"No problem. TAX INCREASE!"

Charlie, you're a cop, and you know the cop mindset. When they get new toys (either physical or executive), they *have* to try them out to see how they work. If I could trust SDPD to restrain themselves, and only use this thing in last-resort situations, fine... but in far too many cases, cops get into their GI Joe thing and start kicking in (the wrong) doors. Something like the Urban Assault Vehicle cannot but contribute to that mindset, and guaran-damn-teed it'll be used to the wrong end.

"a roof slightly arched so gasoline from Molotov cocktails can trickle off, and it is even able to withstand grenade attacks."

Thats why when you make your Cocktails... fill the bottles 1/2 way with quaker instant outmeal - Makes that stuff stick... Oh, and use high octail... 112oct racing fuel is even better.

"Police agencies nationwide are obtaining armored-type vehicles to combat criminals' increased firepower."

You mean...like the siege cannon that could have been bought without paperwork before the 1930's? Like the full-auto .30-06's that could have been obtained in the same time period? Poppycock. But, anyway...

As long as it's not armed, I don't think I see a problem with it, but I would agree that an armored Suburban would be more-ah-PC. Don't tell me we are falling for the same trick the proviolence folks pull on us all the time! How many of you would be upset at police possession of bullet-resistant pickup trucks or vans?

I do agree that militarization of police is a terrible idea, but I don't know that I'm against this one. If it had a turrent, though...

George Hill, sugar works well too. Because if you have ever put sugar in your gas tank(Do not, DO NOT, do it) it carmelizes the gasoline in your engine making for a very sticky situation.

Sugar would work very well too.
We tested Soap and Sawdust and other things to improve the Cocktails effect.
Outmeal worked the best. Sugar while not test - would have very possitive effects as well.

Oh - and bottles - Perier bottles are the best... Wine bottles, some of them, are good too - Beer bottles are the WORST.

You need to add motor oil and polystyrene to the mix. Benzene is good also. Motor oil and gas 50/50 is good if you are materials limited. If you have access to powdered Al or Mg this really adds zing to the mix. Semper Fi...Ken

Well, to be honest, I agree that most LEO's are on our side. However, that won't do us much good if our LEO's don't start turning around their national organizations. Instead, we get conventions of LEO's and police chiefs cheering Gore.

Coinneach, I really like that .... the War on Some Drugs. Good one.

Live and let live. Regards from AZ
