Gentlemen,
This has been an interesting and enlightening discussion.
Let me simply say, as my final post on this topic, that I have a great deal of respect for the police officers who believe in the Constitution, and who find themselves in the difficult situation of enforcing today's laws. I understand that they did not write the laws that they enforce, and I hope that one day they will again be constrained by the Bill of Rights. They will still have plenty to do.
As for unintentional discharges--be they negligent or accidental--I'm just glad no one was killed this time. A guy in my company at the School of Infantry was killed by one, even though the shooter should have known better. Does that mean all Marines are morons? Of course not, but it does mean attention should be focused on the issue, so that future deaths might be prevented. Those of us who carry guns as part of our job should be very self-critical of ourselves and our colleagues when we or they fail to do so safely.
