SWAT accidental discharge

Gentlemen,

This has been an interesting and enlightening discussion.

Let me simply say, as my final post on this topic, that I have a great deal of respect for the police officers who believe in the Constitution, and who find themselves in the difficult situation of enforcing today's laws. I understand that they did not write the laws that they enforce, and I hope that one day they will again be constrained by the Bill of Rights. They will still have plenty to do.

As for unintentional discharges--be they negligent or accidental--I'm just glad no one was killed this time. A guy in my company at the School of Infantry was killed by one, even though the shooter should have known better. Does that mean all Marines are morons? Of course not, but it does mean attention should be focused on the issue, so that future deaths might be prevented. Those of us who carry guns as part of our job should be very self-critical of ourselves and our colleagues when we or they fail to do so safely.

A.D.

Gentlmen I am not a LEO but I have been deputized numerous times when they were in a bind. I do not want to be a LEO , I will not be a LEO, but I will not refuse them when they ask for help. I could not put up with the B.S. they have to deal with this day an age. I have had the opportunity to observe them in action up close a few times. I can understand how a accidental discharge can happen and I will blame it on training or the lack of it. I have observed many dumb mistakes in their gun handling. I have also observed most LEOs I have watched are poor shots.I also blame this on the lack of traing and not having mandatory pratice.

Lawdog;
The Japanese walked into someones house not just knocked on the door
jah;
I agree many officers are very poor shots however the ones that are good shots train on their own.They shoot at local ranges.A person that takes on a job must have profency with the tools of his or her trade.If this means shooting on your time then so be it.It should go with the job.
I read this thread and I didn't want to post but I am anyhow.I hear the saame old tired auguments with no changes.
If you don't like it change the law or you have no right to say anything because you have not walked in my shoes.
I don't think we will ever get past this mindset and elitism
that has evolved as a defense mechanism.I am quiting my post mow as I don't want to get more involved in this.There will never be a meeting of the minds as there isn't a common ground to meet on.

The news reports I saw and read at the time stated that the young Japanese man and a companion knocked on a door trying to find a party-a Halloween party, I believe. I never saw anything reported about entry into the home.

A couple of years ago, the SWAT team of the Aiken Police Department (Aiken, S.C.) decided to raid a teenage party with dynamic entry because of information they had developed involving guns and drugs at the party. They based this decision on the unsupported testimony of a fourteen year old runaway with criminal charges pending against her. (Real bright guys weren't they? -skipped the intelligence analysis and grading of intelligence sources courses it seems) So here they come with flash bangs and silenced MP5's. A window was broken, the flash bangs tossed in, and the door broken down.
Net result was a gallon of red koolaid that was taken to the lab to be desperately tested for drugs-it was negative. Oh, yeah-and a teenaged girl with permanent hearing loss in one ear from a flashbang grenade detonating by it. The city lost a 2/3 million dollar suit and of course is appealing. The department has defended the officer who planned the raid on this impressive intelligence and the idiots who obeyed his orders. Idiots I said and idiots I maintain-those may have been lawful orders under the cirmcumstances but anyone who would follow those orders based on that intelligence is a clear and present danger to the safety of every individual in their jurisdiction. Hell, a teenage runaway might claim that you have the body of Hoffa in your living room closet.

I'll tell you one thing, though, they'd best be thankful it wasn't my daughter, my niece, or my friend whose ear they destroyed. They don't have enough money to buy me off.

By the way, this ain't cop bashing. I don't care for armed fools whether they wear a uniform or not. I've talked this one over with cop friends familiar with the particulars. They agree with me.
