survivor garbage

I didn't watch any of it either, but have a couple of friends who were terribly fascinated by it. I'm sure lots of folks ate it up; I'm just not that type of voyeur.
Now, if they're all really beautiful women that 'go native'... :D

I didn't see any of it either, couldn't even tell you if we get on poor man's cable where I live. Not into game shows.

I watch some, my wife was kinda into it. it was amusing at times, but I also found it sort of offensive. "Reality" TV???? Oh, come now, that's like "must see" TV - there is no such thing. I also found the 'manufactured' celebrity repulsive, but I think it was cool that they made them eat rats and bugs to get some. I'm not looking forward to seeing more of those dorks in full shill mode this fall.

Unfortunately, there is a large segment of the population that appears unable to discern TV from reality, and also thinks that life is a spectator sport, and as H.L. Menchen (sp?), the Bard of Baltimore once said, "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

I'll probably watch some of the next one in OZ, ostensibly for the scenery, but I'm sure there will be a few giggles in there too. M2

Jeez, some of you need to relax. Is there some sort of intelligence test that entertainment must pass to be deemed "good" or "not idiotic"? Just because people watched Survivor doesn't mean that they thought it was all real, or that the contestants actually might die or something. Yes, I did watch some of the show (sometimes it just was too goofily dramatic to watch). Does that make me or anyone else who watched a moron? I think a little mindless entertainment is good every so often. What a person does for relaxation/entertainment is very subjective. What is one man's Shakespeare is another man's crapola.

Scaramanga, you said it. I am confident enough in my intellect and judgement that I can watch some silly things and not feel "sullied" by it.

Good points. Personally, among other things, I enjoy watching "JAG" even though I'm in the Navy and know full well just how hokey it is (although I must admit, I'm constantly amazed at how many mundane details they actually get right). Entertainment, by definition, doesn't have to be edifying, it just has to entertain.

I stick by my contention, though. Within the foreseeable future, some legal-beagles are going to figure out a way around the liabilty barriers so the network(s) can have a real "survivor" show on in prime time. (And yes, I thought of "Running Man" myself when I posted that.)

Having said all that, I think I'll pack up my latest acquisition and head to the range for some entertainment... :D

I find "Survivor" to be far more entertaining than sitting around b!tching about things that have no bearing on my life.

I find a little mindless entertainment to be refreshing.

I find a little mindless entertainment to be refreshing.

I agree with this,by & large it does no harm,
however the media (tv) has done more to harm
our country then any other type of enterainment and my concern is that it has
no way to go but down. The news media does
not try to hide the fact they favor the
Dem. party, most all television is produced
with a liberal outlook. They have spent the
past 30 years trying to change "your" views
on the "average working guy". They favor the
fringe element of society. It can be funny,
it can have a lasting effect on "young people". My children are grown but if I had
young children in the house now television
would get the boot.
How does that go "you are what you eat" or
you become what you watch..
adios and happy watching.

I agree bullet44. If I had children of an impressionable age I would have very strict control over what programs are viewed.

Having said that, I'm always up for something violent, crude or disgusting every once and a while.

Survivor was about the best on the TV menue these days. It is the opposite of how groups of people are suppose to survive together. They were pitted against each other rather than banding together to help each other (except the alliance). It was simulated Darwinism.

Watched it, liked it!

I DON'T like Springer, Real world, Big Brother, soap operas, or Opera.

This show was not "reality TV" This show was brilliant! It has captured the attention of so many. The creators of the show deserve a hats off for originality and smart casting.

These folks were after 1 million bucks, no teenagers living in mansions, or barefoot trailer-parkers fist fighting on a stage.

I don't think the next one in Australia will come close to the acceptance the original got.

Always remember, you control your gadgets, the don't control you.

That being said, Bullet, we agree that parking a kid in front of a TV is destructive. However, the fault is not with the TV, but with the parent who put them there.

I HATE TV.
And, I am not one of those people that claims to watch no TV but I realy do. I mean, I went without a TV for almost a decade and loved not having a single one in the home. It is amazing how little you miss.

I got married and my wife suffers from slight medical problems that put her in bed at times for days or weeks, so she bought a TV. I am trying to convince her that our life was better without it, but she does like to watch it.

Anyway, I really hate TV and I really don't watch it but I will admit to liking Survivor There is not a single other show on TV that I would sit down and watch. When the TV is on I leave the area or I do something else like reload ammo. But, I did sit down and watch Survivor.

I liked that show! I only missed like two of them! I love watching the dynamics of the small society, and watching just what people will do for a million bucks, and watching the manipulations of the politician-types etc. I just liked the show. I loved Rudy and his bluntness. I was very disappointed though when the politician won.
It says a lot about our society. Out of all those people, in the end the slimy weasel politician won, and the people voted for him even though he was an open scumbag manipulative backstabbing selfish arrogant politician!!!!!!!!!!! Speaks volumes.

I do not think the show was for idiots. Unless you think that the show was about survival in the wild, which it was not. If you watched the show as a psychological and societological study of the dynamics of human relationships, especially when money is involved, then it was a good show.

Never watched a single minute of it. My own philosophy regarding popular culture is that if everyone is watching it, I won't like it.
There've been exceptions ("Seinfeld," "The Godfather"), but usually I'm right about myself.

I did find it interesting that four million more people watched the final episode than voted for Clinton in '96. And the episode had more than twice the viewership of the Republican and Democratic conventions.

My neighbors were having a "survivor" party and were screaming and yelling so loud when the winner was announced I swear I thought I was going to see a replay of the Lakers post-championship riots.
