Surplus Ammo

Patrice, I dig what you are saying. I had the same situation. Boating accident. Man, it was bad. My boat hit another boat and everything went flying into the water. I had a bunch of my guns and rifles on board, and lots of my ammo, and then WOW/BANG/KERPLUNK it all went overboard. Lake Wallenpaupack, out in the middle of the lake. It all went overboard and sunk to the bottom. We were lucky to get through the ordeal alive, but thankfully no one was lost or hurt. Just a lot of lost property. Sure am going to miss those guns, rifles, and ammo.

Wow, compared to all of you, I have no ammo at all. I have like 50 rounds of handgun ammo at this time, in only one caliber, with no ammo for 2 of my other handguns, and no ammo for my rifle either.

I also am on a fixed income, and my supply shows it.
About 200 rounds each of 10mm-.40-.45 all in target loads.
I dont count my HD/SD ammo as i dont shoot it,and it stays in my mags.
What i did do with my 10mm G20 was buy a conversion barrel so i can shoot cheaper .40 out of it.
I need something that shoots .22lr either another conversion or stand alone gun.
Buying the 10mm or .45 target ammo can add up.
just my measly 600 round supply is in the area of $300

I had a Novel Idea, how about some of our well of friends take us to the range one day! Just don't shoot me for the Idea!!!!!!!!!

It varies.

My .40 I try to keep around 1,000 rounds for, my 9MM I have about 3,000 because I picked up 3, 1200 round cans for $80 apiece.

Self-defece I try to keep about 120-150 rounds of.

It all depends on what it costs, but I try to keep at least 500 rounds, a comfort level of 1000 and my ultimate fantasy is 10,000 rounds apiece.

Not sure if this is true...

... but have been told by some reloaders that at 10,000 rounds or more, you have to declare an arsenal to ATFE.

Not having researched this, I just keep a lower number than that.

I think someone is giving you a line of bull, you can own as many guns
and ammo as your wallet dictates as long you are legal to own guns.

I like that, "declare an arsenal to the ATFE..."
So, how does one do that, exactly? Do you call the local field office and say, "Hi, this is Ursavus, and I've got an arsenal over here...?" Or is there an arsenal declaration form you got to fill out and mail in to the HQ in Washington? Maybe since Obama is so Internet-savvy, there's now an online arsenal declaration website. Seems to me that once you got the arsenal, you can use the same paperwork to declare whatever else you feel like declaring. Like, maybe independence for an island in the middle of the Susquehanna River, or that you are taking over a large American car manufacturing company, or something like that? My dogs have made me promise that once I get my arsenal registered, I am going to declare that I'm taking over the dog biscuit industry in this country.

Apologies, and correction

Other posters are correct, there are no Federal limits.

The issue is specific to Massachusetts. There is a 10,000 round limit on Centerfire ammo.

I was just messing with you, MLeake. But I might be serious about the dog biscuit thing. One doesn't take back a promise made to a 95 pound German Shepherd.

You'd be in danger...

... taking back promises to my 9.5lb Jack Russell, too. The small ones are craftier at getting even.

I don't have any "surplus" ammo.

As soon as I get any "surplus", I shoot it up. Doesn't happen often...not nearly often enough...

none of my ammo is "surplus"

And handloading is my another major hobby for me. And I reload for over 25 rifle and pistol calibers. plus I like to have a supply of rimfire rounds on hand as well (5-10,000)

I have some rather unusual and exotic calibers, and try to keep at least 100rnds onhand for them. In more common calibers, it ranges from a few hundred to a few thousand rounds.

And no, this is not "average":D
