Surplus Ammo

How much Surplus ammo does every one keep on hand for all there differant calibers? I was just wondering with the way things were if people are hoarding even more or are still practicing the same? And what the average gun guy keeps in reserve regarding his ammo for his reifles and pistols? I'm sure I need to go out and buy a S____load of ammo Since I live on a disability check I usually buy practice ammo once a month and go shoot it to keep up my form so ,so much for my surplus! My Sd surplus is 2 mags, pretty ****ty I know, anyone want to help support Hey I tried something for effort guys, let me hear the hoards so I can get embarrassed!

No reason to be embarassed. There is no "magic number" since there are just too many variables. It all depends on how many guns of different calibers you have, how often you shoot, your personal "comfort level" and probably the most important factor, your budget.

If your "comfort level", for the sake of argument, is 1000 rounds of a particular caliber and you reach that level and you don't have any spare cash laying around or falling out of your pockets, you either needs to adjust your "comfort level" or curtail your shooting activities until you can afford to replenish your stock. Its really just that simple.

Of course, YMMV!

It really varies.. I tend to keep more handgun ammo than rifle and more SD ammo than hunting. Lets just say I could drop enough deer and elk to feed me for life and defend myself against a lot of zombies...

Goal: Minimum of 10,000 rounds per caliber of gun/rifle as a deep supply, and then I also like to keep a "shootable supply" of 1,000 rounds per month per handgun caliber, and 500 per month per rifle caliber.

But since ammo is hard to find, I've got a couple boxes of each caliber, probably about 150 rounds for each caliber of gun/rifle.

I never seem to have a lot of handgun ammo around. A few odd boxes of my primary calibers, usually a goodly amount of .22 LR for rimfire bullseye matches.

Rifle ammo is a different matter altogether.

Currently I have

About 400 rounds of 7.62x54R
1000 rounds PRVI 62 grain .223
1300 rounds 30-06 "national match" from Lake City and FN
360 rounds 30-06 "black tip" armor piercing
1400 rounds 7.62 NATO Remington "Kleenbore" 168 grain BTHP Match

And a couple thousand brass cases of .223 Lake City, .308 Lake City, and 30-06 Hungarian with bullets, powder, and primers for reloading.

No, not a survivalist. Just came into some really good deals recently.

I don't keep a lot on hand. I try to keep a couple of hundred rounds per cartridge type. Some of which I have a little more for and some of which I have a little less. I don't stock pile, but I do like to have enough that I can simply pick and go to range without trying to find ammo first.

Optimally, I would like to have 500rnds/caliber in reserve. Laugh if you will, but 'keeping' a wife & children is expensive and ammo/gun dollars are few and far between.

Since I've started reloading, I try to keep 1k rds per caliber on reserve. Anything over that usually gets shot at the range during the week... then reloaded again.

Will I ever need 1,000 rds all at once... man I hope not! It's just nice nice to have them on hand. Not once have I gotten stressed out that Wally world, etc. doesn't have any 9mm in stock.

I like to keep 500 rounds of my favorite SD ammo in primary handgun calibers and 2K in primary rifle calibers, and 250 rounds of good LE 12ga buck.

Unfortunately, none. I only have the SD ammo in my magazines. I just don't have the $$ to buy any except when I'm actually going to the range. Believe me, I wish I had the time, space, equipment, and money to reload my own and keep thousands of rounds on hand. I also wish I had a 50" LCD TV. And a pony. Well, maybe not a pony.:D

I won't say how many actually rounds I have; it's not important; but i will say that all the ammo I have is for multiple purposes. I.e. I only keep usually 1 box of self defense type (HP type) ammo for each hand gun. I don't believe I will be shooting any more that 20 people per caliber in self defense. Maybe I'm naive; but I just don't see myself shooting 20+ people breaking into my house or robbing me on the street. HOWEVER: I ensure that my "Plinking" ammo is dual purpose capable. I.e. For my 38spl and my 357 mag; I make sure that half the ammo I keep for plinking is WADCUTTERS and the other half is some sort of soft point. Wadcutters are a FANTASTIC self defense round. But they are also uber cheap for plinking. For my 45acp; I make sure I plink with Semi-Wadcutter lead. Again; also good for self defense. And so on with the other calibers. Believing that shooting lead in your gun instead of FMJ is bad on the gun is silly. It doesn't make the gun that much dirtier or run any worse. And practicing or plinking with the Ammo that you protect with is a major waste of money. (Unless you are reloading plinking and defense rounds) Your gun will not perform any significant difference between shooting FMJ/Lead practice rounds and your Hydra-Shok or whatever Hollow Points. Not at a distance of 20-30 feet. But to semi-answer the numbers question; I almost always buy ammo in bulk online. But that's not to say I would have/keep 10,000 rounds or more. I shoot a lot, but normally never have more than 500-1000 rounds of any ammo on hand. Except 22LR. There's thousands of that around. I shoot that almost every day.

A trip to the range with my wife and our friends costs me just over $200. I can't afford to stock up at that rate. We save up, when we can afford it we buy ammo and go for a range outing. No surplus really. A few odd rounds we didn't have time to send downrange.

...boating collision....

Well, a guy I know on the FN forum & I had a boating-collison, both boats...everything went overboard.--Patrice:rolleyes:

"Yea, I shoot 2000 rounds a month, but in summer maybe 5000 and just buy ammo by the pallet load" Man, are you guys spending the money so that baby has no shoes or something? Thinking of your high ammo consumption over a year, with todays prices and unemployment, etc. I cannot see it unless you reload alot. I don't get the shooting or practice I used to, and my new car is a 4 cyl. because of potential gas prices, but I cannot see squandering 20% of my income on bangs!
