Suggestions for reliable semi-auto

My vote is for the Glock or EEA Witness full size in 10MM. Im not so sure I would use a .45 for deer hunting. Alot of folks will disagree with that but Id stick with the 10MM or even think about picking up a gun that shoots the .357Sig. That is if you want a semi. Dont rule out a revolver though if you want double duty as far as CC or hunting is concerned.

Carbon, you and Bravo have forced me to rethink my opinions on the 10MM. Based on peoples descriptions I always thought it was quite the boomer.

I have shot 9mm, 40S&W, and 45acp. I don't really notice any more push to the palm of my hand. Where I see differences is in the muzzle blast and muzzle flip (I think that's the right term). The front sight on my P99 moves very little and I can pick it up for the next shot quickly. The others seem to rise quite a bit more.

The 10MM is definitely on the things to try list. Thanks.

I hope you enjoy it when you do get one. look forward to welcoming you to the <strage look> "dont you mean 9mm" club.
The 10mm is quite a powerfull round, but it is by no means unmanageable or painfull. It does however take practice to shoot as fast and accuate in combat style shooting as a 9mm. Just dont dwell on the recoil before during and after the shot. BTW, I just got a 24 pound spring for my GLock 20 so that I can shoot the extramly hot stuff from Grey Area Ammo..ie 180gr @ 1450fps, 200gr @ 1320fps. I expected to have to switch back to thestock spring to shoot normal carry ammo and plinking loads. On my last range trip I checked for function with the heavy springs using Winchester silvertips, UMC FMJ and Blaser FMJ. To my suprise they all functioned normaly even with the monster 24 pound spring. I now have a 10mm that has less muzzle flip and recoil than my P99. Even with stock spring, I have no problem putting 100-200 rounds of full power ammo through my Glock without ANY discomfort or soreness. Sometimes after long sesions with a steel 1911 I have a little stiffness or sting in the web of my hand..not so with the Glock 20. A friend of mine has a 29 and it really has no more felt recoil than the full size (presumably due to the double set recoil springs)..the flash and blast is a little more impressive though.

Next, The purpose of this gun would be for ccw and if can squeese dual purposes out of one gun I would like to use it for some very close deer hunting.Say 25 yards and 100 lb deer. The deer around here are generally pretty small. I have bigger dogs.So a 10mm may be a good choice. If I can find one that functions.

As much as I hate to admit it, the gun you pine for is the Glock 29 in 10mm!!!!

Thanks for all the continuing info,I have a few new questions.
First I would like to acknowledge the fact that I heard what bad_dad_brad said about the glock 17 and 19. It seems every time I turn around I am reading about some new rediculous extreme test they have come up with to try to make this gun jam. No dice, the gun won't jam. If the gun was shaped different, and was in 10mm and could be carried cocked and locked I wauld already have one. I would be shooting my gun instead of talking about a gun I don't have.:)
Now my questions
Does H&K make a 10mm? Does Sig make a 10mm?
And, Castlebravo I visited your web page, have you tried to make the Delta Elite and Witness misfeed? I read you tried to make the CZ-75 misfeed and could not. You also mentioned the Glocks can be forced into misfeeding by limpwristing, that is the first time I have heard that.I assume you are talking about the big bores. Another reason for me to stay away from the Glocks for my purposes.
I think I will be looking at 10mm's this weekend at a gun show.
Looks like I will be looking at a witness a lot.

Mostly I don't like the bulky shape of a revolver for carry, I prefer the flat shape of an auto. Also I like a safety for cocked and locked carry.

"Does H&K make a 10mm? Does Sig make a 10mm?"

No and no. I have *heard* that a USP40 or P220 can be converted, but I wouldn't recommend either.

Dude, I try to make EVERYTHING fail. I'm paranoid. :D

The deal with limp-wristing Glocks is that it varies 100% from person to person, more than from model to model. I'd shoot my Glocks (I've owned several) left-handed and try to get the vaunted limp-wrist jams, and never did. A friend of mine (who is not a swishy little sissy ;) ) has limp-wrist jams all the time with a two-handed grip, but only with Glocks. I'd just say shoot a Glock, or any other light polymer-frame handgun before you buy one.

The Witness was very reliable once I got the newer-design factory magazines. I got it when they first came out a couple of years ago and that was the only snag. You can carry the Witness C&L, which is nice. The only serious problem with them IMHO is that they ship with a weak recoil spring; I'd suggest something around 20lbs or so from Wolff Gunsprings. If you want some improvements done to one (two words: trigger job), then you might want to try D.R. Middlebrooks:

My Delta Elite was reliable with almost everything box stock. Once I let Dane Burns fiddle with it it will feed ANYTHING.
