Who do y'all like when you want to buy 500-1,00 rounds? I live near Ft Worth-anyone ever dealt with Cheaper Than Dirt? And who should I avoid? Many thanks, geegee.

jadams951: Thanks for the response. Now tell me, if you buy from these two, what brand of ammo do you prefer? I'm glad to hear about CDT, as I could drive there and pick some up if I wanted to.:D geegee

I have bought from Cheaper Than Dirt quite a bit. I bought a case (1000 rounds) of Wolf 223 ammo and it has been a great amount of bang for my buck.

The only reason Bushmaster says not to use Wolf is because they believe the steel case will cause possible problems with the extractor. Personally I've used plenty of Wolf in my Bushmaster with no problems. For the price of Wolf compared to other .223 you can buy an extra extractor, just in case, and buy loads of ammo and have fun and saving yourself a load of cash. It won't hurt your rifle at all other than that possible extractor problem and I'm not sure that will even hurt it. Case steel is about the same hardness as case brass so there really isn't a problem. Steel has been used for years in cases. Also worth noting some other russian ammo has steel under a copper wash on the bullet itself which can wear the barrel a little prematurely. Wolf DOES NOT have this in their .223. It's basicly safe cheap ammo. I'll buy another 1000 when I need it. I get mine from various companies in Shotgun News.

FWIW, in my .223 (which is an AK) the most accurate cheap .223, or the cheapest accurate .223, is S&B (Sellier & Belloit).

I shoot a lot Wolf. Its just not as accurate in my rifle as S&B.

Ammoman is da man! I wait for sales that he runs occasionally. Latest is 1000 rds of Winchester Israeli made Q3131 for $189.that price includes shipping and I get it the next day!

I have also purchased .45ACP, 10MM, 22LR, 9X18, 9X19, 30-06 and 12 ga slugs and buck from him. Always get what I order promptly and with no problems.

Even my UPS driver asked me about him! He even sends me an E Mail with UPS tracking numbers so I can trace the package.

With all the stuff I get from him I must be on somebody's list:D

Steel Cases

I questioned the Olympic arms Armorer/ Gunsmith about steel cases and his response was that evidence showed that the steel cases chewed up the aluminum receiver of the ar15 upper. He shot competitively and strongly suggested to avoid the wolf stuff. Steel is definitely harder than brass, just try squeezing each with some pliers.

Alright then, let's review: Cheaper Than Dirt is ok. Probably should price their Sellier & Belloit, avoid the Wolf (I've shot the stuff in my pistols-cheap-yes, dirty-whoa!:( ). I'll also check out ammoman & aim. Possibly take a look at the South African, and Israeli. Am I missing anything? Any other suggestions?

Man, you guys are a veritable font of information!:) geegee

... has INCREDIBLE prices ... unfortunately they are not listing any .223 today ... I have gotten .308 from them and recommend them wholeheartedly. Other than that, you already have the list of the usual suspects.

Geegee...it's hard to say what ammo you should get for your rifle. If you are shooting an ar type rifle then just buy several boxes of different brands of ammo and see what your rifle likes best. My Bushmaster rifles really love Wincester Q3131A and the South African 55 grain 300 round battlepacks.

As recent as leas Tuesday - 13 November - Galyan's had the Israeli-made Win Q3131A priced at $2.99 per box of 20. That's not bad, but it's 10% less in case (50 box) lots. $134.55 per 1000 rounds; about what it costs to load your own! I haven't loaded any, yet, but my estimate was about 12 cents per round, using 55 gr. FMJ bullets.

Ammoman's delivered price is decent - I bought a case a while back - but Galyan's is very good!

Keep in mind that Ammoman doesn't charge for shipping, while Cheaper than Dirt does (and it's expensive). Factor that into the listed prices.

The one thing about Cheaper than Dirt's shipping is that while their shipping is QUITE high on small orders, they have a max shipping charge of $19.97 ... so shipping on a couple of cases of ammo is a REALLY good deal, and if you can get your friends in on a buy, it can appear almost free.

That said, for whatever reason, I have yet to place an ammo order with them, I just thought that I'd clarify the shipping issue! :D
