suggestions for a carry gun

SP 101

Definately take a look of the SP101 in 3" barrel if you can find it. Won't fit in pocket but is easy to IWB or OWB. Very accurate and looks good. I haven't found much problem with shooting full bore 357 loads with it.

MK40 Elite, MK9 Elite, S&W J frame. I've been hearing good things about the Ruger LCR also although have not seen one. The Kahr MK40 has been a favorite of mine for several years, small and extremly thin and flat. I have a M&P 340 and while it's a bear with .357 rounds it isn't too bad if you practice with 38 while shooting jus enough .357 to not shy away from it. The 340 loaded weighs about 1/2 what the MK40 weighs empty.

If I had the money right now and was in the market for a carry gun I would look hard at a Ruger SP101 in .357mag.

FWIW I am really pleased with my M&P 40.

Over a span of about 30 years I went from a .38 snubnose to a high capacity 380 ACP and then back to a .38 snubnose. The Smith & Wesson model 442 is my all-time favorite, and I carry it in a Mika pocket holster in front pants pocket. I've owned snubbies made by Charter Arms, Taurus, Colt, and Smith & Wesson. I don't think I'd ever buy another Charter Arms or Taurus. I like Colt, but it's 6-round cylinder was a little larger than the Smith & Wesson J frame.

Something a little different to consider....

Smith & Wesson Model 327. Large N-Frame .357 magnum 8-shot snub. The barrel looks odd because that gun is large frame, that is a 2-inch barrel.

thanks eveyone for your help I have decided to take a look at all the guns that have been suggested and pick the one that fits me the best. I like revolvers a lot and am really comfortable shooting them but I will also be considering a semi auto.

thanks for all the help and I will let everyone know what I get.
