Suggestions for a .308?

@4runner

Actually, they are not. I've got a 10FCP McMillan - and despite the quality of the stock it is not bedded in any fashion. It still shoots sub-.5 MOA at 100 yds with 168s and 155s (but absolutely will not eat 175s).

I keep going back and forth on getting it pillar-bedded. Its got my long range glass on it and it'd be nice if I could find a 175 mix it'd digest.

Ike666 --Was that a stock Savage you got? I have bought 3 in last 1.5 years and all have been pillar bedded.I just got a new Stocky Stock for my 223 and had to buy pillars to go into in. I also have a mod-10 308 FC. It is pillar bedded. Has a Savage Stock on it though

I sold a lot of M-70 Winchesters to my customes at my suggestion. However, I laid off the post 1964 . . . .
If you don't mind enlightening me, what did Winchester change in 1964? I see lots of references to pre- and post-1964 models, but I've never figured out what change(s) they made.

Winchester went out of business in 1964 and was purchased by USRAC (US Repeating Arms Corp) who made many cost cutting changes to the designs. Aficionados consider pre 1964 Winchesters to be the only true Winchesters.

@4runner - stock from Savage with the McMillan stock option. No pillars, no glass, no aluminum. Still, it shoots like a champ box-stock.

Re: the Win Mod 70, the pre-64 - post-64 debate really only applies if you want an older, used rifle. Then, I'd definitely look for a pre-64 gun (although all of them aren't so great either). The biggest difference was in the elimination of the controlled round feed bolt by USRAC (that and general QC issues).

However, the current generation of Mod 70s coming out of Columbia, SC are excellent rifles. Among other things, FN brought back the CRF bolt and dramatically improved the overall quality of the rifle. I bought one of the new Mod 70s last September and it is a great shooter.

Ike66--Thanks for the clarification. I have never purchased one with a custom Stock on it. I have (all 3) just plain stocks and them then i order a stock from Boyds or Stockeys,ect,ect. Yes they do--All shoot likie a champ for sure. The Savage stock i have always been told you can't use a bi-pod because the stock flexes to much. Which has never been a issue to as i bench shoot any how.

I just sold a rifle that would shoot .258" groups at 100 yds. :) It was/is a 1.5" rifle at 250 yds. ;)

Build your own. That's the only way you will be 100% happy with it. I built mine off of a Remington 700 action and custom 1/10" twist barrel.

Edit: Sorry, I hit the 3 instead of the 2 in my previous statement. It should have read '250 yards'.
