Stupid .45 acp question

Okay I am really considering buying the new XDM .45 acp.

I have never owned a .45 acp. I had a G37 once for a year and then had to sell it cause money was tough.

My question is this:

Every where I go no one has any .45 acp ammo. Most places on the internet is always sold out.

I do not reload so what good is a pistol if you cant find ammo?

Also if it is this hard finding .45acp ammo now, imagine how hard it would be in a teotwawki situation.

Maybe I should just stick to 9mm. I can still find it everywhere.

.45 auto ammo availability...

It may just be that we are so close to TEOTWAWKI that is why you cannot find .45 ammo.:D

On a more serious note, ammo availability in most calibers has been tough for over a year now. This is a lesson in being prepared and well stocked in the calibers you possess. Gun are very expensive paperweights and don't work very well as clubs in self defense situations.

Perhaps the answer is; start reloading. .45 auto is one of the easiest rounds to load, with lots of data and components to scrounge.

...or you could just get a 9mm but who is to say that ammo won't disappear soon as well?

All the shops around me have plenty of 45 in stock. But I do like to reload. I have several hundred waiting to be loaded plus about 200 loaded.

The stock levels are beginning to come back up. There was even a poster here a few days ago rejoicing that his local Wal-Mart had 45 ACP on the shelf for the first time in ages.

ammotogo.com and ammoman.com have some in stock but it's not a great deal, price-wise. Cabelas has some online for pretty fair prices (less than $20 per 50 for the PMC Bronze as an example.)

I live on the east coast, and frequently check the 2 Wal-marts near me for 45ACP ammo. Usually if I go on a Sunday or Monday morning, they have 4-10 boxes of the 100 count WWB ammo in stock for 45ACP, and twice that in 9mm.

Any other day, and the shelves are empty.

The Dick's Sporting Goods near me ALWAYS has 45ACP in stock, but it isn't cheap there. They have 100 round Remington UMC JHP's for $65. They have WWB 50 packs for the same price as Walmart 100 packs. But, they always have it.

45ACP is my favorite caliber, and the one I shoot in the highest quantity. I reload as well, but I still try to pick up a box or two every week to add brass into my circulation.

Several of the on-line sellers now carry .45 ACP. It may not be exactly what you're looking for but it will be adequate. Try Midway and Cabellas.

Yes, .45ACP is hard to find in some places, but look at it this way. It's hard to find because it's so popular right now, not because it's a niche cartridge like 10mm or 38Super, or worst yet, a cartridge with an uncertain future like a 45GAP. The .45ACP will be around forever and supplies are starting to catch up with demand. The various stores around here are starting to stock up on them again. Granted, there aren't any dirt cheap sales like they used to, but maybe one day that will be back as well.

Also, you may not reload now, but who's to say you won't someday. The .45ACP is one of best cartridges for reloading in my opinion. It's very forgiving with most powders and reloading components are just as common as the cartridge itself.

The shops around here have plenty of 9mm and occasionaly .40 or .357 sig.

Even our walmarts have 9mm in stock. If you look where the shelf is tagged for .45 acp you can actually see lots of dust where the boxes should go.

Now I do admit the other day at Gander Mountain they had a single box of seller and bellot .45 acp fmj. The box was faded and old with some type of rust stains on it. It was a box of 50 rounds I think the guy behind the counter said it was $40.00

Seriously if it is this hard to find ammo for the .45 acp, there will be no hope in finding it when the SHTF.

At least there will be plenty of 9mm every where.

Good point - there's a world of difference between "scarce because no one wants it" and "scarce because *everyone* wants it". .45 ACP definitely falls in the latter category.

If the S ever does hit the F (and I'm talking about real S, not just "omigod, there's a Democrat in the White House), then ALL ammo is going to disappear off the shelves in a heartbeat, regardless of caliber.

If you want a .45 ACP, get a .45 ACP - the availability is trending up, not down. Even today, you can get it in any quantity you want if you don't mind going online and you don't absolutely have to have one particular brand/style.

Or, for a meager investment in time and money, you can start reloading - all of the components are readily available today.

OK, I have to ask: what is TEOTWAWKI???

"The End Of The World As We Know It".

Note that this forum doesn't allow SHTF/TEOTWAWKI" threads - this thread so far is probably as close as you can get without running afoul of the rules, since it's just talking about these scenarios in the general context of ammo availability.

All ammo would disappear off the shelves. Everyone expects this.

However, once your stash has been depleted if you cannot find more ammo then your pistol is useless.

At least with the 9mm once the ammo has dissapeared off the shelves it can still be found everywhere.

Yes - if you're strictly talking about which centerfire pistol cartridge has the most rounds "in circulation" at any given instant, 9 mm is going to be your best choice.

But in dire circumstances, if you think you can get your hands on 9 mm ammo once the retailers no longer have it, I bet you could also acquire a 9 mm pistol.

But there's no reason to pass up a .45 ACP pistol if that's what you want. The ammo is out there today, and supplies are only getting better. It really wouldn't take much of a "stash" to last you once you're no longer shooting for recreation.

We got spoiled...for decades

Ammo was cheap, plentiful, and always in stock.

Today, it's not. And its not likely to ever be the way it was then. Deal with it the best way you can. And know that any shortage is a temporary thing, brought on by panic buying (hoarding), and the laws of supply and demand.

I don't recall hearing about people having trouble finding ammo in common calibers a few years ago, only in the last year and a half -two.

Seems to me the best thing to do is buy what you can, and don't shoot it all. Then buy more, when you can. And don't shoot all that, either. And I don't mean keeping one mag's worth of ammo from each box.

If you don't have a stockpile, work on building one. Doesn't need to be done overnight, but you ought to do it. For what you own at the least, and for what you plan to get, as you can. If nothing else, the ammo shortage has taught people the value of having a bit put aside for a "rainy day", so to speak.

I reload, and cast lead for my .45 acp. The local Wallyworld here in Temple,Tx is over stocked on ammo. Heck they have 3 cases of .45 colt even. There is more ammo on the shelf there now than I ever seen there even before every one went chiken little over ObamaNation. The sporting goods guys said they have had the shelves full for over 2 months there.

Maybe thats the problem.

Too many people stock piling.

Once you have a few thousand rounds or so for your .45acp. Stop buying

Let the rest of us buy some.

Some people could probably be on that A&E show called "Hoarders"
You walk in their house and every room is stacked to the roof with boxes of
.45acp ammo. Cant even walk through the house, you have to crawl over crates of ammo just to get around in there.

Visit Your Local Mom & Pop Gun Store

First, from day one of the ammo shortage I never had any problem finding .45ACP or other calibers. I just went to one of the local gun shops. Yes, cost was a little higher than the big retailers. My local gun stores with indoor range were even better. They always had ammo on hand.

Now there was a long dry spell at the big retailers like Wally World, but even today I saw stacks of .45ACP at my local Wal-Mart.

I do keep a "rainy day" stock pile.

I don't really know how many people are hoarding truly huge stockpiles of ammo, but there are a lot of new gun owners in the past few years, and there are a lot of people that are keeping a few hundred rounds on hand whereas in years past, they might have only bought ammo when they went to the range to shoot.

Even since I've gotten into reloading, I don't have more than 600-700 rounds of any one caliber. I just make sure that I can have a long range session with some friends without having to break down and pay retail prices for ammo.
