I'm sorry to hear you lost your house, hopefully things will get better soon. Some of my old child hood friends up in PA are also struggling as the need for machinists and such has decline significantly during the past 18 months.
Regarding your guns. If you cannot afford a serious lock box the next best solution maybe to to do your best to hide them. Pick up an inexpensive shelf from Wal-Mart and some bargain bin hard back books from the local library's donation bin. Now you can have hours of fun cutting out the books to hide your hand gun collection, this is of course assuming you do not have small children in the house.
The typical thief will steel your TV, laptop or DVD player; but I have serious doubts that 5 pound copy of Mitchner's "Chesapeake" is in any danger of going anywhere.
