i'm considering an m40. i've had only glock .40's and have some questions.

reliable?

easy to take down completely like glock?'

where do you get your parts? exspensive?

thanks.

My M40 has been very reliable with every ammo except S+B, which would not chamber fully. Mine has the most accuracy and least recoil of any .40 I have shot (Cougar, USPc, P99, Small Glock) I just ordered a mag from CDNN with no problem, and I have no idea what kind of parts it will ever need, it is a high quality weapon. The takedown is very quick and easy, but I have never striped a glock, but can't imagine it being any easier. If you want the M40 not a S40 you can get them very cheap from CDNN, I think $369. Mine was an early model and had the trigger upgrade performed a couple months ago and it is even better than before, which was good. Now I would say I like it better than a glock trigger for sure. good luck

Takedown is easy ... as easy as Glock

Parts ... well I haven't needed any parts but I understand GSI may still carry some (would need to check with them) once Steyr gets their distribution all worked out I don't think parts will be difficult to get.

My M40 has been very reliable ... only a couple of FTEs but that was with some cheap Russian ammo.

I've fired it side by side with a friends Glock 23 and we both shot better groups with the Steyr (and it may be my imagination but I think the recoil felt a little less with the Steyr).

The only problem with them is that some people can't adjust to the sights. I had no problem (and I really like the sights) but its something to consider.

I replaced the sights on my Steyr M40 (and M357, which I sold) with traditional bar-notch plus a three-dot night sight configuration. I shoot much better with it. I also ordered a set of the same sights (IWI's PT night sights) for my Steyr S9. I can't hit s**t with the standard sights, and don't want to get adjusted to using them. Besides, I prefer to have night sights on my handguns.

A buddy of mine picked up an M40 a couple months ago and I've shot it a few times. Its a very impressive out-of-the-box pistola. I *love* those sights! The gun shoots very nicely. Low recoil, very accurate, easy to reacquire target on follow up shots. If I was looking for a .40 I'd probably get the Steyer in spite of my preference for Berettas in most cases.

thanks for the replies. i'd like to get m40 but the parts availability bugs me. the only place i found that had mags they were $40! the m40 intrigues me but i'm leaning towards a .45 i'll probably go with a g30.

when steyr is more widespread i'm defenitely getting one. i heard they showed a .45 model at shot show. anybody hear this?

I've heard there will be an M45 and an L45 (L for Large) ... would be awsome if they made an S45 (which would sell like hotcakes if they did).

Other then magazines I can't think of any parts you would need right away (but yes, magazines ain't cheap ... the S&W Sigma mags will work, but the floorplates are ugly)

once they "get out" more and introduce the .45 models they will take off. and i'll buy one for sure! i really like the design.

The M9 I had: shot bursts! GSI was a pain to deal with. When I called to see what to do, they didn't seen too surprized or concerned about the incident. When I asked about the Gift Certificate promised to people who sent the gun in for trigger upgrades they told me I couldn't get one.EVEN THOUGH they replaced the trigger group!?
The gun is single action and NOT safe. The striker can drop with out the trigger being pulled :barf:
Believe me, when I decided to sell it I put it through a few "Tests" first. Scary:eek: Put a primed case in and try to get the striker to drop with out pulling the trigger. A sharp bump to the rear of the slide or bottom of the mag, and pop!
I thought it was the best fitting gun I've ever had! I liked the sights. It can be field stripped with one hand. With the grip down facing away, hold the top of the slide in your hand like it was the grip. Press the lock with your thumb while turning the take-down lever. Ta-DA! Slide and frame in your hand!
If it had a "Firing-pin saftey" to keep it "Drop safe" I'd still have it.

styer

i have a M9. it is a great gun. very accurate, hasn't had a failure to feed yet, feels great in the hand, takedown is very easy, i could go on.
styer has been around for over 135 years they know their stuff.
dynamit nobel, styers new importer has been around for a long time too. they e-mailed me today. they should have their parts and services network up soon.
as soon as i get another couple of magazines my styer M9 will be my primary concealed carry weapon.

I had been eyeing a M9 for quite awhile. I finally went down to the local shop and put one on order yesterday. I tried and liked the Glock 19 but once I tried a M9 my mind was made up. I had to have one. For me the funky sights were faster to aquire and more accurate than standard sights. Also the gun had less felt recoil than the 19. I cant wait till it gets here. I have goose bumps.

Hey Lunde!

Lunde:

If you don't mind a couple of questions about your S9[yes, I am thinking of getting one(already have a M9)]:

Type of Carry? IWB?
What holster do you use?

As compared to your M40, how does your S9 feel? [comfort-wise when you carry it]

Thanx `n advance,
22x9

22x9, I don't have a holster for either Steyr yet. I am waiting for a Ky-Tac BraveHeart for my M40, which will also fit my S9. I do like the compact size. It's not much more compact, though.

I am also expecting the replacement sights (bar-notch with three-dot tritium night sights) today. I cannot shoot with the standard sights well.

Regards...

The Steyr has a firing pin safety. Perhaps yours was defective?

NO IT DOES NOT. The M9's NEVER had a firing pin saftey in the design.I have exploded drawings.Nothing in the slide prevents the striker from moving forward without the trigger being pulled. The 3 safteys on the gun are all in the frame, and onlt prevent the TRIGGER from being pulled.

from what my glock armorer told me, macmans was very rare and/or defective. or somebody tinkered with it.

How does he know what the problem with my gun was?
The DEFECT is in the Half-assed design of the gun.The lack of firing pin saftey and out of battery disconnector caused my pistol to shoot Open-bolt type bursts. And the only guy who "tinkered"with it was the Steyr armorer at GSI.
I loved that gun untill I found ALL of it's weaknesses.
Don't believe what the mags TELL you, have a look for your self.
They tell you that the gun is double-action, but the striker is cocked. Three independant safteys. OK, but they all do the same thing?! But they don't keep the cocked striker from slipping off of the sear.
I found out the hard way. PLEASE Don't carry a round in the chamber!!!
The best saftey is between the ears.

I have not seen exploded drawings which could compare the safeties to the Glock. But page 15 of the manual notes that there are trigger, drop, and firing pin safeties that will only be deactivated after having pulled the trigger.
