Steyr M9 or Glock 19?

Glock 19. The Steyr has had a few problems, nothing earth shattering, but the G 19 hasn't had any of the problems that Steyr has shown.

You'll be able to find pre-ban high-caps for the Glock and not the Steyr. Though I haven't shot the Styer, I think that I'd like their triangular sights. Have fun choosing!!!

That article sounds quite biased to me. I can't knock the Steyr at all since I haven't shot one but I wouldn't feel any "safer" shooting a Steyr than I would a 19 based on the information in this article. The article is by and large simply the OPINION of the writer.

Case in point, "When I looked inside of the Steyr, I was pleased to see how strong and beefed up all the parts are. This is one tough gun that is excellently engineered to last a long time."

WTF? Ok, this guy must be some more metalurgist to be able to determine the strength and durability of the Steyr parts just by doing a visual inspection! And when is the last time you heard of a Glock .40 having durability problems due to the fact that it was originally designed around the 9mm? Hmmmmmm? Horse $hit!!!!!

He also relies on the supported vs. unsupported chamber/Glock .40 KB (non)issue to justify his preference for the Steyr over the Glock.:barf:

Being a G19 owner, I'd cast another vote for it.

Standard capacity (Let's use the right terminology!) magazines can be had, though they are a little pricey for originals. Customer service (as was mentioned). And for me, I just can't see myself using that triangular sight system anywhere near as effectively as I can the Glock.

For me, the G19 represents quite possibly the best offering by Glock as far as concealability, shootabililty, and capacity.

According to the linked article above (for what it's worth) they have had:

1- "Some of the early Steyr pistols dinged up the top of the slide a lot from ejected brass."

2- " Another Steyr customer degreased his Steyr M40 and then began having severe trigger problems."

3- " One of my two M40's did have trouble resetting at times, for no obvious reason. This problem was later fixed by using precision drilled holes in the metal sub-assembly."

But, they allegedly took care of the problems:

"In late May, 2000, I bought a 3rd M40 with a serial number in the 10,000 series. And all the above bugs have been worked out. Steyr made a few internal changes and manufacturing improvements to fine-tune the Steyr M pistols. The recoil spring seems to be slightly stronger, so the slide reset is very solid."

Just snips from the article for you.

I have a Steyr S9, have owned a G19, and currently own the .40 cal Glock series (22, 23, 24, 27, 35). IMO the Steyr is a better pistol. I like the trigger better. It is a stronger pistol as it was originally designed as a .45 ACP, BUT that makes the slide much wider than it needs to be for a 9mm. As a result the Steyr is thicker and harder to carry in an IWB holster. As another poster mentioned, there are pre-ban mags available for the G19 and not for the Steyr, so for me I would choose the G19 over a Steyr M9. There was a problem with the first Steyr M9 pistols in that an attempt was made to make the trigger 'litigation proof'. That created a rough 8 lb pull. Enought complaints and it was put where it was suppose to be and the problem was corrected.

I've owned the Glock 19 and the Steyr M9. There is no question in my mind that the Steyr is a better pistol. The egonomics of the Steyr is better, the trigger is way better (also a shorter reset), the triangular sights are fast, and the Steyr has several safeties. I had absolutely no trouble with my Steyr. The Glock is obviously rugged and reliable, but in today's world of polymer pistols it is primitive.

For some reason right now there are excellent deals to be had on the Steyr M pistols.

I picked up my M40 for $375 (that's with 2 magazines and the PO had the factory trigger upgrade so there was a gift certificate I sent in for a 3rd mag).

I'd say the Steyr is every bit as good as the Glock in performance, and appears to be slightly better made (at least to my uneducated eye). Not that the Glock is not a well made firearm.

But one of the Glock advantages is that you can get "pre-ban" hi capacity mags for it and there is no such thing as a "pre-ban" hi capacity mag for the Steyr (all where made after the ban). Doesn't seem like much of a loss to me though because the Hi-Cap LE mags are only 2 more rounds.

Either way I don't think you can go wrong...if possible wrap your fingers around both of them (and maybe take them to the range) and pick the one that feels the best in your hand.

There are rumors that there will soon be an M45! ...if so, you'll probably see a few good used M40s on the market (same thing when the S40s finaly hit our shores).

I own both and much prefer the Steyr. The glock grip is bulky, I find the Steyr grip much more comfortable (I have small hands). The Steyr has a lower bore axis and muzzle lift is significantly less than the Glock. My Steyr serial # 10xxx has been utterly reliably, the glock has been very reliable, but not perfect. I'm hoping Steyr comes out with a larger 9mm for IDPA.

I have both and like em both. The S9 is actually almost the same size as the 19. On paper the S9 looks like it would actually be closer to the G26 subcompact size, but its not. Really just a toss up. I do like the safety feature though on the steyr.

I have shot both and own an M9. I prefer the less blocky grip of the Steyr and the trigger is lighter and shorter than the Glock. Either is a fine pistol, but the Steyr fit me better.

Clarification, please - what is the capacity of a "high-cap" (original, non-neutered capacity) Glock 19 magazine?! I thought it was in the neighberhood of 15 or 16 rounds and not 12. Thanks!

I won't post my paper target, but 7 out of the 10 bullets are touching.. with my Steyr M40. Ergonomically superior (I'm left handed, the Glock mag releases draw blood from my hand) support chamber, I like the loaded chamber indicator, as when I grab my gun in the holster, I know if I have a round in there... Superior ergonomics, and it's more glock than a glock.

Glock's claim to fame:
3 safeties ~ Steyr has 5
Low bore axis ~ Steyr's is lower
Easy to point ~ Steyr's is easier
Tenifer ~ Steyr .. Tenifer
Steyr has cool sights that are easy to aquire
If you saw the bullet ramp shine...

I was going to buy a Glock, but ended up with a Steyr and never looked back..

Most Glocksters I know haven't shot a Steyr.. But 100% of Steyr owners I know have shot a Glock..

Go with the Steyr, it's sweet.. it beats a glock in everything that is a glock claim to fame.
