Steyr M40...New Trigger Module?

DDS

New member
Hi: I was interested in the Steyr and had heard they had some problems with triggers on some of these pistols. Supposedly they have corrected the problem on the newer production models. Does anyone know at what serial number starting point the new trigger was put into production?

Thanks! Dave

I think it's about #5000, but you can check with GSI. I assume they'll still answer questions, although I believe they are no longer the official importer for Steyr.
I have an M9 serial # 11xxx which I like more than my Glock 19. It's a great gun. I hope Steyr renews production and importing.
By the way, if you're Dave the DDS, so am I!

Dave S. Thanks for feedback! Yes I am a DDS(23 yrs). Have a General Family practice in MD. I do a lot of C&B and have been pondering the idea of a CEREC unit for the past two years. Where do you practice? I just purchased the Steyr and it will have a serial number greater than 10,000. I am hoping the trigger is not spongy like my Glocks. I have heard a lot of good things about the Steyr except the odd sights. Thanks! Dave

Should be no problem with trigger with that serial #. I find the Steyr trigger much better than the glocks. Much shorter reset. The sights take a little getting used to, but I believe night sights are available for them. I find there is less muzzle flip because of the lower bore axis, and the grip fits my small hand (good for dentistry) better than the glock.
I practice in New York, emphasis on microdentistry and cosmetics. You can get a lot of ammo for what the Cerec will run!
E-mail me off-forum re: dentistry if you'd like.

Best,

Dave

I have an m9 and m40 both in the7000 range. They have the upgrade. The trigger is great.Steyr will be announcing a new importer on Feb.15th.I think the steyr is the best pistol of it's kind out there.IMHO.I just put night sights on my M40.

I love my Steyr M9 too..Very fast gun for competition..

I changed my sights to Heinie Slant Pros and an EGW front dovetail sight..check it out

Nice sites. I didn't realize Heinie made them for the Steyr. When I first got the gun I looked into Ashley Express sights for them but they weren't being made. Personally I think the triangular sights are OK, but were a marketing error. At least they're metal! I've use the Steyr in IDPA and enjoyed it.

He actually doesn't..

some good gunsmithing..the sights were modified to fit the existing dovetail, so the originals could be reinstalled.

If it was the only gun i shoot, I would have kept them..they were ok...now the gun is just right..

yeah I want an s9, s40 or s357...c'mon steyr

Thanks for the pix! Can you provide Heinie's exact
model # of the sights you use?
Gotta put some on the M40 I have.

Unfortunately this is a custom affair..

I had a local gunsmith tackle this for me ..after some discussion with him and with George Smith at EGW..

We took and EGW dovetail front and a Heinie Slant Pro for the 1911...the dovetail on the sights were modified to fit the factory dovetail so the factory trapazoid sights could be reinstalled..

This took some doing as the dovetail is metric and some weird angle..not the 60 or 65 degree cut being used on the 1911..

The front sight was shaped with a slight ramp and serrated..the Heinie serrations were taken out and the sight reserrated with finer lines..personal preference..The main reason I went to the expense and time to have this done is because I shoot this arrangement far quicker than the factory setup..IMO..makes a good gun even better.

hope that helps some...maybe Heinie will come up with a sight if enough people call and ask...

So, how'd you get the loaded cart indicator out? I've looked at it but didn't want to f' it up until I get my sights. I took the clip off, extractor out, fp out, and cant find the little austrian puzzle piece that lets the thing pop out easily........

Maybe I just need to try more force?

I am very fond of my Steyr M9 (serial number 11XXX) and it has been a very consistent performer. The Glock did not/does not fit my hand very well. Nice crisp, short trigger.

I actually like the trapezoid sights. Call me crazy but the idea of a well defined sharp point makes a lot of intuitive sense to me.

FScott..actually I think you are right...The little I played with it it seemed very accurate for me out to about 15 yards..For me..I am just used to the notch and post and out to 25 I am more accurate faster than with the trapazoid...The M9 is predominately an IPSC production gun for me that I use for carry too..actually my wife likes the feel a lot too..so it become hers..

Getting the loaded chamber indicator out does seem to be the puzzle in breaking down the Steyr. Anyone know besides eerw's gunsmith?

OK..a buddy of mine who had his apart says do this..

"Remove rear sight.
Remove plastic slide cover plate.
Yank out.

Yup. You have to remove the rear sight. No way around it. Not
recommended. Bad. "

Anyway..up to you guys...

uh, what? is that how to remove the cart indicator? My somewhat educated evaluation says that the sight is NOT coming out before the indicator.

anyone else have info on this?

On my original rear sight..there is nothing to hold the loaded round indicator....it is smooth on the bottom face of the sight.. I'll go looks some more though...

I believe if you call GSI and read off your the serial number they'll tell you if it has had the trigger upgrade.
