Starter Handgun?

I still have and shoot the late 1960's version of this pistol that my dad gave me. 500 shots for $3 or so. Doesn't get any better than that. The boy will also learn to take his time and aim since the second shot isn't just a trigger pull away. Darned accurate too!

And riggins_83 is correct. BB and pellet guns should be treated with the same respect as firearms. They will indeed penetrate clothing and much more.

Ruger Bisley or Bearcat, depending on the size of his hands. I like the single action because of the "tv factor". Kids love to empty a clip fast and will be less deliberate than wanted during an important training period.

Take him out to the gun shop and have him pick one out. Keep it in your collection until he's 18 and gift it to him as a graduation gift. .22 is a great trail caliber and has "heirloom" potential. A CO2 gun will probably be relegated to "toy" status (not saying it is, but a CO2 pistol and a smokeless cartridge are worlds apart) as he gets older and discarded in favor of something more substantial. Bearcat or Single Six would be great choices I think. Even a Ruger Mark III or a Buckmark would be something to consider.

I'm assuming you're planning on walking with him and this isn't something your'e just turning him loose with.

My kids got started with a Marlin single shot 22 rifle - I still have that gun for my grandson when I meet him......simple, easy to monitor, easier for them to actually HIT something with it...........they graduated onto bigger and faster and more expensive to shoot guns.........

But when you hand them one bullet at a time, teach them how to aim, control breathing, trigger control, etc.......it is a lot easier with a single shot rifle than anything else

JMO, YMMV
