Standard GP100 vs. GP100 Royal Phoenix

Im gonna be born into the revolver world pretty quick here and im dead set on getting my hands on a GP. im a sucker for things that are built with a little extra beef. I know there are those who like the Hogue monogrip... i amnot one of them. my question in that case would you spring the extra money and get the royal phoenix ( http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger-GP100RP.htm )? or buy a standard GP and then an aftermarked wood Hogue?

That's a pretty blue finish, but.......

If you are really going to use it to get good with revolvers, it's beauty might keep you from really working it out hard.
Stuff like tons of reload drills, drawing out of a holster, general wear and tear it takes to get good will all take a toll on the finish.

For shooting, just get the stock blue GP and some nice wood hogues and spend the extra on a good range holster, reloading equipment, etc.

I'd pass on the Royal, and just get the regular GP and spend the $80ish or whatever the wooden hogues would be. That way you can actually pick your wood, and the texture/finish you want.

ok let me elaborate.. ive grown up shooting my fathers revolvers. so im not completely new to the revolver world just the ownership of.. but i do agree with the working it hard concept.. a standard gp is probly more logical. but i do like the looks of the royal ALOT :o

Well Christmas isn't that long gone, if it's going to be your first you aught to get the one you want.

I don't care for the grips at all, but that's the best bluing I've ever seen on factory GP, even if it is a special run for a big distributor.

Well, that may have been a rash, and very personal call. I just prefer to have the fingers on my small hands go where I like them, and not where a designer thinks they should. Maybe a little old school also, Blued steel and Walnut do it best for me. But hey, it's only another inter-net opinion. You have to make yourself happy...

I have both a regular and a Phoenix. If you don't like monogrips I wouldn't suspect you will like the wood ones much either. They are the same shape. The finish is pretty trigger and hammer also are polished and the trigger on mine has no sharp edges like my older Gp100

You don't necessarily have to baby the phoenix. It really depends on your definition of "pretty". A nice deep blue is pretty to me, but a deep blue with some wear and tear is even nicer and adds some character to the gun. My suggestion, get the phoenix and don't go easy on it.

.45 vet i totally understand. i like specific things on a gun. and im very stubborn about changeing my ways. i have big ol' meat hooks attached to my wrists and the finger grooves were a sticking point for me as well.. im not sure how my hand will fit. im not a fan of the monogrip for the simple fact that its black and synthetic.. i like me some walnut character in all my guns. and for the polished trigger can i hear more on that? is it a smoother pull than the standard?

I really like the "Phoenix" but I am holding out for a "Wiley Clapp"

The trigger and hammer are just polished on the Phoenix. Nothing a dremel can't fix on the regular GP.

I too have large hands, and I couldn't get the Hogue Monogrip off all three of my GP's fast enough. I am a big fan of the Lett style grips with wooden inserts. There are lots of folks making the inserts and options are unlimited.

yeah i think if i got a standard GP or if the grip on the phoenix doesnt feel right ill go right for a Hogue wood grip of some sort. I do like the Wiley Clap but id rather have the extra inch on the barrel. Il be using this one primarily for carrying in the deer woods, and if i decide to get a smaller double action id go for the SP101 i believe. so its to my understandting that only the finish on the trigger and hammer is different? theres no difference in pull weight smootheness etc? also id like to know if anyone has input on the front sight and replacing it with something a little more visible?

That Ruger GP-100 Royal looks sweet! Having said that, it looks like another Ruger that isn't being produced enough to meet demand.....kind of like the SR-1911 that I want so bad. Grrrrrrrrr

the 1911 is secoynd on the list trust me haha. i just dont have a practical use for it right now and id like to see some reviews and some feedback on long term usage and durabilit

+1. I find Hogue grips uncomfortable as hell. The Lett style grips are excellent and I really like them.

Out of the two, they Royal is nice but I'd be happy with the regular GP but that's just my opinion.

I also like the royal blue!!I have a stainless 4 in LOVE IT!!! I have the hogue wood grips pao feral wood no checkering they are nice .I would buy a phoenix just to have a special GP 100 and get a 5in too! Then I would have two dealer specials. The phoenix is costly but the finish is OUTSTANDIG!Like and older S&W finish.

Another Talo Willy Clapp GP100 3" is listed, but not out quite yet. The second Willy Clapp GP100 is a Blued one. I may have to own one of them when they get on the shelf. They should have the old style Ruger grips with some very fancy wood inserts.

Dude, the grips on the phoenix ARE hogue wood grips replacing them with hogue wood grips wouldn't make much sense....
