Stainless or Blue

s/s verse blue

Revolver for me only a HK USP 40 auto. My choice is blued. I keep my weapons clean and protected so don't really worry about rusty. Seems to me (especially in a revolver) a blued gun has a better out of the box action.

I like stainless guns, but I can think of two negatives 1. stainless scratches easily and scratches on stainless are quite visable. The good thing is that you can have stainless re-polished. Polishing a blued gun and trying to match up the bluing is tricky. 2. Stainless guns are flashy and reflective. Not always a quaility you want in a firearm.

You just contradicted yourself. You say stainless scratches easily (which it really doesn't...there is a difference between material scratches and surface blemishes) but you admit it can be wiped right out where as blued guns cannot. That seems like an advantage to me...not a disadvantage. :)

I don't agree with the stainless being heavier statement. Most iron alloys used in guns have very similar strengths and densities, so weight diffferences should be negligible assuming same slide design. I've only shot blued and plastic pistols, so I don't have anything to compare it to. As far as day to day up keep stainless is better. If you aren't diligent about wiping fingerprints off a blued gun, those prints may end up as a swirl of surface rust (readily removed with a little elbow grease and a rag with Break Free). Put my 870 up for the winter time after cleaning and put it in the safe. Next spring my finger prints were still there. Now I'm pretty anal about wiping it down and placing in the safe with a ragged hand. I'm not sure what the finish is, but my browning 12 ga automatic almost has a powder coat that seems bomb proof, but I digress.

Stainless for easier upkeep.

My thorts

My revolvers for black powder, definately stainless... you can see blued ones rusting as you prepare to fire your second shot....

Revolvers shooting only smokeless.... either way, some look good either way, others look better blue or nickel. Personal choice (unless you live right next to the sea = Stainless)

Semi Auto's (personal choice, unless you live next to the sea = Stainless)

Plastic :D Go the Glock!! :D (Stainless Barrel) ;)

Hey, where can I get a Stainless Glock? :D:cool:

Blue. It's not that delicate. Look at all of the old guns that have survived in good condition.

Stainless looks, well, unfinished.

Stainless all the way. There is no real negative to stainless.

Carbon steel bores are supposed to be a little more accurate, but unless you're a competition shooter, even a stainless bore will be more accurate than you are.

Stainless is sweet. I'm just not a big fan of two-tone. I'm an all or nothing kind of guy, I guess.
Just like I hate chrome door handles and trim on cars. My fiancee doesn't even notice, though. It's the first thing I notice. Fugly, imo.

Or a chocolate autoloader for half the price. That from someone who owns a blued Browning Hi Power, a stainless S&W 686+, and a mongrel 637 Airweight.

Cordially, Jack

I prefer stainless; especially brushed and not shiny stainless. It's simply more durable. I may be wrong, but most blued finishes are only about .008" thick.
