Stag Arms V.S. S&W

Checked out some AR15s today but couldn't make up my mind on which one to buy. The S&W was 10% off putting it around $898, it had no sites but there were plenty of scopes laying around to slap on this thing. The Stag Arms was $917 regular price and had the A-Frame and rear site set up. Other than the sites they were pretty much identical weapons with adjustable stocks. I might be able to get an additional 10% off the S&W but I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions of these two weapons they could share before I make my decision. Thanks.

I havent heard of problems with either rifle but I know or think I know that Stag is primarily a AR platform meaning they put all their time if not most into making this gun perform correctly, the S&W splits their time up between rifles and pistols so.... This is just a short thought tho. I own a DPMS and love it! No problems at all. Good luck with whichever one you get!!

This is just my opinion. But both are good entry level ARs. A set of sights front and rear will cost you about $150.00. If you are left handed then the Stag without a doubt in a left handed configuration. If you are right handed then either, your choice.

I've got a stag 4L and I'm very happy with it. I had to go to hand loads to get accuracy from it but with good loads its sub-minute. As rifle southpaw I figure they are the only ones building rifles correctly

Agree that they are good starter rifles. You will have a lot of fun with it and you can modify them however you want. After you get your starter gun save some money and step up to a DPMS .308 SASS you will love it! Good luck in making your decision. :D

I feel like from reading the S&W is a better overall built AR, not that stag is bad by any means what so ever, i just feel the S&W is little above it, and also extremely well priced. You really can't go wrong with either, only brands i would stay away from are Cerberus owned companies, just not my taste and i dislike their QC. Thats just my personal opinion though.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts. All in all it sounds like they are equally good weapons. I will most likely end up with the S&W, for some reason it felt better in my arms than the stag even though they appeared to be identical. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't be buying a sub par weapon, thanks!

Most people recommend colt, noveske, lmt, and bcm as some of the top tier brands, I personally own 2 stags, one rock river nm, and a bcm. Very few people make a bad ar these days, but some may be more up to mil spec then others.

Stag is the in house brand name for Continental Machine. They make lots of parts for a lot of other AR-15's on the market... including early SW's I believe. They also produced parts for the military M16's. Besides AR's they also do aerospace stuff and other things.

I have had custom build AR's, I have had Colts... I now shoot a Stag. If I do break it... it has a lifetime warranty anyways.;)

I abuse mine, with rarely cleaning, high volumes of fire, steel cased ammo, dropped it, smacked it off things, shoot it till the barrel smokes then melt ice blocks on it.:cool:

Both are decent entry level like people have said, I love my Stag.

Stag=AR company. S&W=marketing company.
I bought two piston M&P's for $1500 apiece and had nothing but headaches. They went back, and were still crappy. Worst firearm purchase ever. They totally didn't stand behind their product, and my inquiries were met with rude dismissals.

And yet, the DI versions tend to work quite well. S&W had a lemon with their piston rifles.

They are both Mil Spec, meaning they are made off the same pattern and all parts interchange, as well as having receivers made by the same foundary (Columbia Machine & Tool or CMT), so it doesn't make any difference. Thay are all the same.

Are S&W barrels made of 4150 steel, chrome-lined, and 1/7 twist? Are they individually HPT/MPI? I'm not saying they're not quality rifles, but they're not mil-spec.
