Regarding the Springfield slides, as far as I have heard it is only a problem on certain 2001 stainless slide models. If you have a problem, Springfield will make it right. The guys at Rangemasters of Utah will probably advise against a Stainless Springfield, since that is the range where mine broke
I bought a basic, all black, Kimber Custom while I was waiting for my Springfield to get repaired. After stripping it and cleaning it (what's with their excess use of cosmoline?), and putting two magazines through it it would consistently shoot 3/4" groups of 5 at 12 yards from a two-hand stance, so it seems plenty accurate, and hasn't had any problems after 200 rounds or hollow point and ball ammo. I'm still breaking it in, but it seems a better shooter than I expect for the $. I did notice it has very generous (too much IMO) barrel hood to slide clearance on the side, but it doesn't seem to effect accuracy.
All manufacturers have a couple of lemons, but most of the top ones have very good quality and good customer service if you need it.
