Springfield Armory - M1A - opinions needed - I think I'm in love.

Duke, thanks for the compliments. Yes, I bought the camo stock (and a couple "as new" GI synthetic stocks) from Fred's of Shotgun News. His camo stocks come in various patterns but he also triple coats the camo stocks with polyurethane. Also, when he fills in the selector cutout it really makes the stock-to-receiver snug.

I think this rifle is capable of 1" groups. I'll be putting the gas system modifications in soon then I'll have to test her again.

Mine is also a standard grade ungoing some changes. I am sorry but I would rather pay the $1100 for a Springfield than $750 for a Polytech that came NIB with a large crack in the stock and a rusty barrel. I Had also read while researching M1A's about polytech and inferior metal, barrels being shot out early, recievers cracking and poor MOA. I also have another rifle in a .308 and I don't mind paying the price for a quality gun that will last.

anyone who would buy a gun with the above mentioned problems obvoiusely either does not know what they were looking or was told it was a good buy.
i do not know about you, but when i buy a gun new or used i ask to do a take down. if the seller will not let me do it then no sale. hell i even carry headspace guages with me when on the lookout for a new toy.like i said i also own a s/armory scout rifle
of course gun owner preferences are just that, preferences. each to his/her own.
also keep in mind, that the so called bad rap polytec received, was part of a s/armory propaganda campaign. how dare anyone buy s/armory offer m-1a's to the public!!
if the polytec is an "inferior" gun, why then does fulton as well as smith in az do upgrades as well as custom guns off the polytec receiver?
again my offer still stands. round for round at 100yds open sights. there are some who swear by s/armory and some who swear at them.
hell the latest debate is even among s/armory owner's m-1a's using all usgi parts vs. non-usgi parts. "MINE IS BETTER NO MINE IS"

Get the Scout Rifle (first). I picked up one a while back and have been very pleased with it. The forward mounted scope mount is great. The only downside is the extra muzzle blast, not horrible but more than the standard gun. I changed out my brake for the flash hider and that seems to have helped. It is very fast in close range multiple target shoots. Either way you go you will get a fine firearm. Good Luck.

Get the NM one first, shoot a couple of matches, you'll love the sport, then IF you want to continue on w/ the sport, SPEND MORE.

But, you will always have that NM rifle. Even if you don't continue.

Mags are $$$$$, but so is the sport.

If you just want to launch .308 bullets down range then IMHO buy a FAL. Cheap gun and mags, mean looking too.

As for the AR-10, well mags are even more $$$$$, and IMHO it looks like an over grown AR-15. But, it's up to you.

WB, I won't tell you what to buy. What I will do is tell you what I bought and why. I asked the same question here about 6 months ago. With all the information I received from the TFL members I decided on the "Loaded" version of the M1A. I was not going to do any serious compition shooting but I also wanted the accuracy of the upgrades you get with that package. For only about $200 more you get the NM barrel and trigger. I also decided on the synthetic stock mainly because I just like the looks of the black rifle.

The M1A is a piece of history that is a blast to shoot. You won't regret buying it so just give in and do it.
