Did I post this to the wrong forum? If so which forum should I post this to?
Thanks in advance.
I'm a rookie to this......

It is OK, Theodore. the Trapdoor is mentioned in the link to this part of the forum. Not sure what kind of info you are looking for. The Trapdoor Springfield was the official long arm of the US army for many years. The 1884 is a fairly late version of the series that began at the end of the Civil War. It was replaced by the bolt action Krag-Jorgensen adopted in 1892, but they were slow in coming on stream, so I think some trapdoors were used as late as the Spanish-American war (1898). Yours would be a .45-70 caliber. These were very sturdy, reliable arms. Yours would appear to be in fair condition and functional. Many, many of these were made so they are pretty common on the collector market.

Volunteers, Militia and National Guard units carried the Trapdoor in the Cuban, Port Rico and Phillipines Campaigns.
