Spotting Scopes?

Thank you Capt Charlie for you honest opinion.
I have to squint alot already so at least that won't be anything new. I'm going to do some more research before I buy something.

Brokenfeather

No problem. I would be curious to see what you finally settle on, and of course... a range report on how you like it.

Captain Charlie

Hey......
I had my 15-45x60mm Alpen spotting scope to the range yesterday...spotting hits from my 22-250 at 200yds.
I will say...I am very impressed with the clarity and brightness of the view. Targets were on white...but the image was so sharp and clear.
It is way better than the Burris Landmark scope I was trying out.

Very satisfied............

If anybody out there looking for scope....just give the Alpen a look.

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up, and I'm glad you like it. I confess that I didn't think you'd be able to see small caliber holes at long distance very well with the Alpen, but I'm glad I was wrong. Now to see what BrokenFeather comes up with :) .

Capt Charlie.....the targets I was using was on white paper....targets I made at home.
I have not checked it out on targets with black back ground......yet
I cranked it up to 45x and I was amazed at the clarity......clear as a bell.

The best low cost scope is the Bushnell Spacemaster series. I bought one based on a review on sniper comparison review article. But I see a lot of Bushnell Spacemasters in varying revisions (older models from the 60s maybe on to current) at my club's range and they are really popular as far as cost to quality ratio.

I also just bent over and bought a Kowa 661 and a 25x LER eyepiece for it. I should receive it this week.

Capt Clarlie

This is the one I meant. It is the one that you had in a previous post. Will it be clear, bright?? More info is welcome.

Scope

Clear & bright? Yup. It's not the brand, Celestron, that I like so well, it's the Maksutov-Cassegrain optical system that does the trick. These optics were designed for astronomy in low light conditions. I have no experience with this particular scope, but I do with the optics. Prior to Maksutov-Cassegrain, a scope with the power and brightness of this one would have cost well over a thousand bucks. But with computer operated machines grinding the mirrors and lenses, coupled with the simplicity of the system, the price was brought way down. Understand that this little scope isn't going to match a Meade LX-200 or very high end spotting scope, but I'm betting you'd be pleased with it on the range.

Thanks Charlie. I think I"ll order one after I get back from vacation. When I get it, I will post my opinions.

spotting scopes

Talked to Alpen yesterday. They are suggesting that I get the 20X60X80. I had a very pleasent chat with them. Think I may buy the kit. It is the model number 788. Best price I can find on it is $373.44 delivered.

It would be interesting to see all of these scopes mentioned on this tread side by side.

BTW if any one has found a better price on the 788 kit please let me know. It will be a while before I can anti up the funds to make the purchase.

Capt Charlie...I finally got to a 300yd range with my 22-250 and the Alpen 18-45 spotting scope.

I might have cheated alittle  ......I shot at the birchwood casey....Shoot/N/C targets on white paper.

With had no trouble spotting hits from 300yds on the white paper plus the birchwood /casey targets :)

That's great! :) I confess I thought you'd have trouble at 300 yds., but I'm glad you didn't. So how'd the .22-250 do at 300?

Capt Charlie.....well....not bad under the circumstances.

Was shooting on a gentleman's farm who was kind enough to let us shoot on it. Had to shoot prone on slight incline...very..very....HOT !!!!....very uncomfortable conditions to shoot in.

The best group measured around 3 inches.
Going to invest someday in a portable shooting table.

My 700vs...groups excellant at 100 yds for sure.....usually one hole groups...so I know I have a capable rifle.....
Going to strive to to better at 300...if I can :)

Thanks...Paul
