Sportsmans Warehouse, Casper WY

I was in Casper, Wyoming this weekend and stopped in Sportsmans Warehouse. I need a slant muzzel break for the AK project I am working on and thought they might have one. I got the attention of the guy behind the counter and this is how our conversation went:

Clerk: "Can I help you sir?"
Me: "Yes. I am looking for a slant type muzzle break fo an AK project I am working on. Do you carry anything I could look at?"
Clerk: "We don't carry anything for those pieces of crap!"
Me: "Well I happen to like them."
Clerk "Thats your opinion."

Then the clerk turned and walked off. I was left feeling insulted and belittled. I have purchased guns from this store in the past, but I don't think I will in the future.

My question: How would you have handled this situation? I was speachless and just left the store.

We all have our opinions, this being a "capatilist' country they have the right to their opinions and right to carry what they wish, or not carry other items where as we have, based on our opinions, the right to shop there or go elsewhere.

I don't know what Sportsmans Warehouse is, so I assume it's a big box store. If so, you should have gone to the store manager immediatly. There is absolutly NO reason for an employee to act like that.
Unfortunatly, since you left the store, I don't think there's much you can do. This kind of thing has to be delt with on the spot.

Kraigwy, I agree. I was just flabbergasted that this clerk was basicly calling me an idiot because I am working on an AK! (Or at least that is how I took it... Maybe I am being to critical) I don't expect them to stock anything, I was just inquireing if they did.

I does seem rather crude to me..It seems like he could have been a bit
more polite than he was..I too have had things like that happen and
I just say, thanks and have a great day...
Also if he had know, maybe he could have told you where you could find the
part your looking for..But I guess you have to admire his honesty....John:D

1. Seen the same thing happen in the fancy LGS in a nearby town. A guy wanted some parts for an AK and the clerk started yelling at him. The customer called the clerk a waste disposal orifice in a loud voice - if you get my meaning. Then he stomped out. The clerk started to yell to all that he was called an orifice. Much hilarity ensued.

2. Wanted some ammo once that was on sale at the big box. It was sold out. Asked the clerk if they would get more. He told me it was crap and did I want my gun to get dirty with a sneer. For some reason, this annoyed me enough to find the manager and get the clerk chewed out.

So that's life.

Anyhow - yesterday, I was in Basspro looking clothes sales. Wandered up to guns and they had Winchester White Box on sale for a good price. I guess I must look like the old wise gun guru nowadays as a nice young man and his son asked me to explain the difference between 147 gr subsonic and 115 gr JHP for his self-defense gun. I obliged. Maybe when I retire I could be a gun store guru - or maybe a cheese store affineur? Just ate a fine TX goat blue cheese - Hopelessly Blue - second prize winner at the 2010 ACS awards.

Your assumption is correct. SW is Utah-based and has expanded greatly over the last decade.

This from the SW site:
Our mission at Sportsman's Warehouse is to provide outdoor enthusiasts with quality merchandise in a friendly, low-key shopping environment.
It's obvious that this portion of their mission statement hasn't been met in the instance related in the OP. I emailed SW's customer service with a link to this thread in case SW management wishes to comment in the thread about the incident and their handling of it.

The SWs around here went belly - up. They had strange clerks. I was looking at a gun before the close. The clerk starts in on a rant about his lousy kid.

Seems he was going to leave her all his land when he dies (like I care) but he goes to her house. Finds a Obama poster. So he totally disowns her and cuts her out of the will! That's nice but can I see the gun?

The whole gun counter gets to listen to him.

They are under new ownership now so all in all it is a much better place, the incident in this thread is not the norm from my experience, I frequent them much more than Cabela's.
I would have been upset too.

I see the idiot clerk comments a lot at the bargain places. More professional places have the "high price" complaint. Guess what? There is no free ride, something has to give some where.

Can't speak about other Sportsmans Warehouses but the one here (Tuscson) has curteous and knowledgeable people at the counter. At least that's been my experience.

Have been more impressed by them than I have the personnel at the Cabellas I've been in.

JWT,

Same here in Mesa. I like the store and have gotten along well with the employees. Prices are not always the best and they do not do special orders outside of what the basic loadout of the store happens to be.

I have a Ruger SR1911 on backorder and I might get that before I turn 100.

They did get in a pretty nice Sig 1911 that I bought and shot this weekend.

Most of the counter staff are pretty avid shooters and I can relate to them.

A response like that is normally only found on internet forums where the "opinionator" can remain anonymous...

Clerk may be gonna learn a lesson in how to lose a job.

The SW in Loveland, CO. has polite helpful staff at the gun counter.

I've also had good experiences with the one in Thornton, CO (suburb of Denver). Guys let he hold a H&K P30 AND a SCAR, without any dirty looks. They were more than happy to answer my questions and shoot the wind.

Still, my favorite place is the LGS, which is consistently only about 25-50 dollars more than Buds, so its worth it to me to shop local for that much.

The clerk obviously messed up pretty badly in his response.

If I were more angered than amused, I would have a word with his manager.
