SP101 grips??

Any one have recommendations for a bigger set of grips for a SP101?

The originals are way to small. I would like a little extra width to get my off hand palm on some stock.
A little longer would be good too. Some thing to get a pinky onto.

I did pick up a cheap set of uncle Mikes grips. They do have a little more room for my off hand. But I still have a dangle pinky.

Not my carry piece so shooting comfort is my main concern with this one.

Yea I was just looking at those. That maybe a good interim fix.
Looks like I can get a pinky on it. So dang hard to tell from a online photo what they are really like.
That Uncle Mikes looked big. not...

There seems to be some real nice looking wood grips available. But I wont take that chance on line. I want to feel them 1st before I put out that kind of money.

Thanks Guys!!! I ordered a set of Hogues.

I really like this gun so I still may get a real nice set of wood grips for it. Just not going to do that on line.

If the Hogues aren't big enough, there are exotic hardwood ones from Indonesia on eBay. Some have square butts and are considerably larger than the original grips.

Wood grips might look prettier, but if you actually want to shoot that SP101 you can't beat those rubber Hogue grips.

Enjoy your SP. I love mine.

If you want a huge set of grips on a small frame revolver, just go up to the GP100. You're defeating the purpose of your gun.

The GP100 has an extra shot, and there are numerous full size grips available for it.

I don't think he is looking for "huge" grips - just something a little larger than factory. I can understand. I'm ordering a Hogue for my new SP101.

The problem with the SP101 grip is that the gun first came out in snubnose and short-barreled versions that were intended to compete in the concealed market. For concealing, you definitely need a smaller grip. When they came out with the 4.2" model (like I have), the idea of concealment went out the window and it serves a different market. Since there is no need to ever conceal that version, a slightly larger grip that fits all the fingers is a good thing.

The SP's 'standard' size grip on it's 'full-size' model is the only reason I haven't bought one yet. Doyle's comment is spot-on, and makes me wonder... I no longer have a GP, so I can't evaluate for myself.

What would be needed to adapt the GP grip to the SP frame?
Is it something "doable" with a bit of internal filler applied to the grip?
Would the contour fit, both above the grip & behind the trigger guard?

I doubt you could put a GP grip on an SP but you can definitely get bigger grips for the SP. The Hogue is just one version (and quite affordable). Fleabay is full of various SP101 grips.

Pachmayr is going to release their Diamond Pro rubber grips for the Ruger SP101 sometime this year. They are target size. They are going to be around $25.00. I will pick up a pair when they are available.

Well, I just got back from the range shooting my new SP101 4". I certainly agree, the factory grips leave much to be desired. I'm thinking it is going to be the Hogue for me too. I'd like to see those new Pachmayr grips but I don't want to wait.

The worst part of the grip to me is that the shortness of it forced me to hold my middle finger too tightly to the bottom of the trigger guard. Shooting full .357 mag loads, I was wearing a sore place on that finger.

I always liked the Pachmayr Compact grip on my SP101's. That grip, unlike some of Pachmayr's current offerings, is well made, fits the gun well and did a good job with recoil and "grippiness". Big enough to get all my fingers on it, but not so large that it compromised concealment. Lastly, none of those horrid over-sized finger grooves that Hogue seems to be so fond of.....

Here is mine with a set of Thai grips from eBay.

That Thai grip looks nice, and you like it, but I notice that it offers nothing to fill in behind the trigger guard. That's the killer with the SP101.

I'm not sure I'd want something to fill in behind it. When I shot my new SP101 for the first time last week, it really hurt my middle finger (resting tight against the guard). When I got home, I compared the grip on the SP101 to the grip on my Security Six. I noticed the Security Six has much more open space between the grip and the guard than the SP101 has. That space is what I really want so that my finger isn't pressed against the guard.

Those Thai grips appear to offer the additional space needed.
