SP101 .357mag technique question.

I kind of skimmed this and I didn't see anyone mention it, but how well do you shoot .38 special out of it?

Also hogue monogrips will provide a better grip with a bit more to hold onto.

Getting to a point where you can shoot it accurately with .38's will be a good place to start before trying to shoot strong .357 magnums accurately out of it.

My my large hands and long fingers, the SP101 was not set up for me from the factory configuration. It took me a lot of light .357 reloads and lots of .38's for me to get close to being semi-proficient with it. I have since switched to some Badger boot grips which are more hand-filling for myself, personally. Some of the higher end .357 loads, designed for deer hunting are not pleasant to shoot, but most other 158gr jacketed or SWC loads I do not mind one bit. I think the SP101 is the perfect smaller framed revolver to shoot more than a cylinder of .357's out of. I wouldn't want it much lighter, but heavier would take away from the usefullness of this gun too. This is one gun, that if I hand off to a buddy to shoot, 9/10 they will have issues with hitting anything. I have put over 1500 rounds through it since I've owned it the past 10 months and am just now reaching a level of proficiency that I'm comfortable with. To me, it's not an easy gun to shoot, but keep at it and you should end up liking it.

Thank you folks. I do love this gun and I'm doing alright with it. It is a handful for sure. I have only put about 100 rounds through it and need more time by myself with it. Sharing it at the range with my 10 year old son right now. 38's are less of a problem as are 38+p but I think it'll take some time and money to get good with it. It's also very cold right now and even uncomfortable to hold it with bare hands. Range is outdoors. I think it might be an all-round comfort thing. Heavy recoil, freezing cold hands, unpleasant, and quite frankly not very smart, over excited RO's. It all adds up. But thank you guys for your help I will get back to you and let you know how I progress.

If you are shooting to the right or left thats because of how much finger you are putting in the trigger guard. If you are shooting to the right it is because you are sticking your finger on the trigger to the first joint and pulling the gun to the right. Way to the left and you are most likely using the tip of your finger and pushing the gun to the left.

Try using the center of the pad of the end of your finger. Dry fire the gun and watch where the sights go. A good solid straight back pull should not move your sights of center. Not much anyway. Practice dry firing at small stuff. Make damn sure the gun is unloaded. When you start calling your practice shots a hit or a miss you will start doing better on targets. And move up to 15 yards and then move further out when you get better. Twenty five yards is a long shot for a new shooter with a snubby.

And yes that empty chamber trick works very good. It will show you all your flinches.

Sweeter Shooter, you are probably flinching because of shooting 357 magnums in a small revolver. Most people don't shoot magnums in a small frame revolver accurately. Also, are you shooting double action or single action? I have a new SP101 357 magnum 4 inch. This revolver is still a hand full shooting 357 magnums. I tried shooting a box of them in this revolver and wound up going to 38 specials after 10 rounds. It you want to shoot 357 magnums get a larger revolver. Lots of options.
Good luck,

I was beginning to think the same. I love the +p out of it, and do pretty good with them now. But the 357 is just punishing. I have actually started to shoot more to POI through following advice here. I keep 357s in it at home and in the car just for SD, but will probably just end up shooting +p most of the time. Which leads me to my next question... Is the +p a worthy self defense round? I understand it's a bit hotter than the 9 but not being a semiauto I wonder if it's enough firepower for SD in this revolver? I mean I know it might change someones mind pretty quick but what about a big guy on meth etc?

Yes it is sweet shooter. I have for self defense Buffalo Bores 158 gr LCWCHP 38 + P. This round and plenty potent enough. As with any round shot placement is key.

If the .38 Special +P wasnt a good SD round I doubt they would sell so much. I would have no problem using them in a SD situation.

I'm low on rounds out of mine as well. I've found the 1st two rounds out of the cylinder I can push out the center of the bull, the last 3 is a crap shoot. I usually shoot a cylinder, put the gun down and shoot something else, then come back to it.

*EDIT* The above is with full house 357. Running 38 through it I've rang a gong at 50 yards 5/5 out of it. I know it's just me when it doesn't shoot and it's just more trigger time.
