Whoa, that's a little heavy-handed if a moderator told you that. Just make an effort at punctuation, as it makes the reading far better for everybody. Take your time and above all, have fun with this.

Gee whiz, guys.

Hey JJJ! We just want you to use some punctuation at the end of your sentences. There isn't anything wrong with your computer. The mod was just saying that because you don't use the punctuation keys when you need to. I believe it was their attempt at humor and to politely tell you to use punctuation. ;)

For example,

I'm not all that good with the computer my granson has been teaching me I have also been out of school for so long I'm not even good at spelling & the rest you sound angry also so I will limit my posts I really dont even know what you mean but when my granson comes over I will show him what you wrote its a old computer he rigged up fpr me ..........

The above is not a sentence but a bunch of thoughts piled in on each other.

You could have wrote it this way with a little punctuation. Of course, this is just my opinion.

I'm not all that good with the computer. My grandson has been teaching me. I have been out of school for so long, I'm not good at spelling. The rest of you sound angry. So, I will limit my posts. I really don't know what you mean but when my grandson comes over I will show him what you wrote. It's an old computer he rigged up for me.

We don't want you to limit your posts. We just want you to use a little punctuation. We also would like for you to start a new paragragh when your stream of thought changes. Before you hit "Submit Reply" hit "Preview Post" and read through what you have written. You can make changes and correct anything before you post.

I am just trying to help you out here fella. Glad to have you here on TFL!!

Granted that was a hard block of text to read in the closed thread. Personally I didn't see anything humorous or polite in the mod's post, and agree that it was a bit heavy handed.

Jimmy, I hope you stick around long enough to start using better punctuation though. As others have said it makes it a lot easier to decipher what you are saying.

Closed.

And this is the moderator's reply before he locked the thread.

It might have been a bit heavy handed, but it was necessary, and I was not making any attempt at humor. We tried to get his attention to improve the readability of his posts when a mod spent a lot of time editing his first post in this thread: http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=387347

And of course there was this one that was closed earlier due to an unreadable post: http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=387342

Folks we do not stand idly by while unreadable posts start peppering TFL. We even have a forum rule specifically covering that problem: Rule #4.

Our intent is not to turn any contributor away from TFL, but to improve the board overall, and the readability of threads and posts in particular.

This is part of the learning curve on forums. Every newb creates numerous new threads before they realize the error of their ways. It's just that these new threads are exceptional in the fact that they are painful to read.

Though it may be true that nearly every "newb" creates some rather, er, "interesting" threads from the perspective of the old timers, an absolute lack of grammar and punctuation are fairly well inexcusable for any native speaker of the english language. We shouldn't even NEED a "Rule #4".

I've seen a mod or two reply to a grammar thread with a sentence fragment or a dangling modifier. What's that old saying about people who live in glass houses?

JJJ - get your grandkid to teach you how to use Word & how to cut and paste. Word will make it clear to you when you’ve typed something with poor punctuation, as it’ll underline everything in green until its “fixed.” Plus it’ll underline everything in red if you misspell a word. Moreover, it’ll suggest how to fix it if you’re not “to far off.” When your done writing - cut and paste onto a post.

Learning how to use Word (especially when you have been out of school for some time), has the crazy effect of getting folk back on track. You’ll not be sorry for learning how to use it!

As for the whole Mod being heavy handed … there are so many folk on here, knowing those who are giving it an honest shot vs. those who have been up all night drinking and smoking must be a challenging task that would make the best of us loose our sense of humor! Not to run down JJJ who’s clearly trying, but if the majority of posts had the punctuation displayed by him … well, I wouldn’t visit TFL. I am sure I wouldn't be the only one. Keep up the good work I say!

So you think it's hypocrisy to impose any standards just because the moderators fall short of perfection?

I certainly don't expect perfection from posters on forums. I also realize there are a lot of good folks out there who are challenged in writing coherent paragraphs. However, I rarely take the time to read posts where there has been no attempt at using the minimal rules of grammar, like punctuation and capitalization. I'm sure others feel the same way.

More to the point, this is a free forum that nevertheless takes money to run. If management has a good grammar rule, we should try to comply. It's like visiting somebody's home and lighting up a cigarette when you know they don't allow smoking in their house. It's just plain rude.

...and so is berating someone publicly instead of sending a PM reminder of the rules. I don't think jimmyjohnsonjr was blatantly violating Rule 4, so Mal's chastizing was heavy-handed. Maybe a review of the Golden Rule would be helpful here....
