Sooooo.. What kinda 12 gauge ammo is everyone shooting?

I Personaky would not want to stare down a BG with anything less then buckshot. Bird shot makes a wicked surface would but very little penetration. Meaning he could shoot and kill you before he fell as a result of your shot.

Actually when you think about it at close range birdshot would do the same damage as buckshot or even a slug because at that close range the shot is still just a huge ball of lead that hasn't started to spread yet. Either way i'd still take 00 buck shot over birdshot.

I have some some reloads for trap shooting, but nothing for self defense.

Of course, with the 30" barrel, my shotgun isn't necessarily the best choice for home defense anyways.

Personally, I don't see a shotgun as practical HD in my area. It's all tight quarters, small doorways close together, and not suited for any long gun in general. So I use handguns for HD. BUT... in all honesty, a standard 7 1/2 shot at the point-blank distances I'd have to deal with would do the job just fine if I couldn't use any of the many other more practical weapons I normally have at my disposal. In most cases, I probably wouldn't even have to actually shoot--there's something about the sound of a pump shotgun being shucked that will make most home intruders need a new pair of shorts.

Where's the guy who has the hand grenades that just make the chick-chick sound of a shotgun racking ?:p

For home defense, 2.75 shells. Since it's just me in the house, triple ot buck. If I had others living with me, I'd use #4, #3, or #2 buck, somewhere in there, for less wall penetration.

Wal Mart has winchester 2 3/4 oo buck 15 round bulk packs for under six bucks. I pick up a box or two every time I go.

My FN SLP has a 2.75" Winchester #1 buck in the pipe followed by 3 Hornady TAP FPD 00 buck followed by 3 Brenneke KO 1oz. slugs.#1 Buck is pretty nasty stuff, might even be better for SD then 00 buck.

HD ammo

Winchester Ranger LE 9 pellet 00 Buckshot or 1oz rifled slugs.

For Remington loads, their 8 pellet reduced recoil are quite nice. As are their 1oz rifled slugs.
