it seems the only shots fired were into the perp:
Armed man shot, arrested outside of White House

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An armed man was shot and arrested outside of
the southwest gate of the White House this morning, CNN's John King
reports.

According to Secret Service and White House sources, at 11:36 a.m., a
man carrying a handgun was spotted outside of the gate. He did not
attempt to climb the gate but was shot in the leg during the arrest,
sources said. Secret Service officers were confident only the single
individual was involved, King reported.

The grounds of the White House are under a strict lockdown late
Wednesday morning. Uniformed Secret Service officers and special
operations officers wearing body armor and toting machine guns fanned
out across the south lawn of the White House just after 11 Wednesday
morning. Tourists taking White House tours were escorted from the
building.

The grounds were locked down by the Secret Service, and the special
operations operatives remain positioned across the lawn.

Sirens could be heard from the White House lawn and a helicopter
hovered over the area.

President Bush was in the White House residence at the time of the
arrest, his spokesman said. "The president was never in any danger,"
White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said.

Just heard the news say the guy is only 17 years old. That can't be right, he can't own a handgun. The news must be mistaken.

Maybe I'm funny that way, but if I were The Prez, I'd order the "lockdown" discontinued, and consider the whole incident as staged by antis. Do it right now; take away the antis' chance to capitalize on this.

Seems like an attempted "Suicide by cop" scenario. At the minimum, packin' near the White House qualifies as Felony Stupid. It's amazing to see how quickly that area can be just saturated with LEOs, & with some serious firepower. Not a good place to be if TSHTF.

Fox News reported that the guy didn't have a criminal record. This is the "worst" type of incident for us, and fuels the anti's arguements the best -- if only there weren't handguns (cry, cry). It looks really bad when a seemingly normal, law abiding citizen with a legal handgun "goes off the deep end". Of course WE know there isn't a law around that would prevent something like this, but these types of incedents create an anti-gun frenzy that can get out of control.

Later,

It has to be the fault of those filthy gun-toting states surrounding their "Utopia". It would be nice to hear a politician ask why the gun laws aren't working.

Yeah, VA got 1 gun/month (& a 3 day wait in Fairfax) because of all the crybabies in DC. Hasn't made a bit of difference to gun crime rate in DC, of course, but it sure is a PITA for us Virginians. MD, OTOH, is almost as restrictive as DC, and they have higher crime rates than VA, wonder why?

I think it's interesting that for 8 years of Clinton, we didn't have anything like this happen (that I can remember), despite the fact that all of us "gun-totin' wackos" the liberals whine about hated Clinton. Now, less than one month in, we get this with a nominally pro-rights/self-defence President.

I think all of us libertarians/conservatives are generally better adjusted as a group, and the crazies tend to be clustered on the Statist side of the political plane.

From what I heard on NPR, the perp was shot IN THE LEG, after several shots from the SS...

What does this say for our national marksmanship? Our Secret Service can't even get a good CoM shot at a nut on the street?

JimR, you have a short memory. Things that happened under Clinton's administration:

1) Pilot crashes private plane onto W.H. lawn killing self.
2) Man is arrested climbing over W.H. fence with (unloaded) handgun.
3) Man pulls a rifle from under his coat and fires on the W.H.

Obviously, no one except the perps were killed.

Ah, Folks, they're reporting that this guy had a history of mental illness. Can anyone say "Prozac"? Is this psychotic drug/violence connection ever going to be reveled by the main stream media? I guess that just wouldn't fit their agenda. Better to blame the gun, rather than highly profitable, chemistry changing drugs.

This isn't good.

As someone else said, this is "great" fuel for the antis. On FOXnews, I just heard them report that this guy supposedly "had a permit". And they went on to say he was a nice guy, living alone, not violent. He helped his neighbor do his taxes last week. Gee. That sounds like me, except I'm not a wacko.

Regardless of the truth of any of this (especially the permit thing), I can see it used as ammunition against the pro-carry position.

Was the shot in the knee on purpose? My guess is yes, though I would have thought they'd have other non-lethal means available...

God I want to post so badly....

'cuz the guy was brought to GW's ER, where I was working today. Got to talk with alot of the SS'ers, (carrying Sigs & HKs). The uniform SS guy was saying that they use Black Talon rounds in a 44 mag config. Hmmm...

The topic of 'Suicide by Cop", well, the media says he has a history of Depression, ( not depression, like being rained out from the range), so there's a likely accuracy. AP's report is pretty accurate, too. Even the mega anti Washington Post focused more on the mental illness aspect. Someone will probably say something anit-gun, but the mental health issues seem to be getting more attention.

I'm so glad that guns are banned in D.C....yeah, I feel so VERY safe every time I go into South East. Oh, well.

I can just see it now -- a psychological profile required for all firearm and ammunition purchases (to be updated monthly by certified shrink). We need more laws!!
