I would say I carry sometimes... I do have a liscence to carry. However, I only carry when I go into the city and such... (meanwhile I would have a 45ACP :D). Until I found out that guy was packing himself I wouldnt let on.

Be discreet.

It depends on the situation and who's asking. In the right circumstances I would discuss it freely with like minded folks. Otherwise I would try to discreetly steer the discussion in another direction. If forced with the question I would try to, as politely as possible, tell the person that it was really none of their business, unless it was their business (LEO, etc.)

Depends who it is and how trusting I am of them. My friends and coworkers know I carry (just about have to carry where I work). That's it....

Family, friend or perfect stranger all get the same response: "Why do you ask?"

My wife knows (obviously), some friends know, a couple of my cousins know and my dad knows. I am struggling with telling my mother, she has always been over protective of me. I suppose I'll tell her eventually.

Happened just the other day

Talking with a carpool buddy and we were talking about how you have to be careful on the road. I made a comment about how you have to be careful because some clean-cut guys like me carry. So later he says "so what do you carry?" I say to him "who says I carry?" him "oh well you said...." me "no I said clean-cut guys like me carry, I never said I carried"
It then dawned on him exactly what I said and he left it alone.

Great idea with a police officer, they hate surprises. TX CHL instructors advise that when a LEO asks for your ID you hand over your state issued ID AND your CHL. Next question is likely to be "if you're carrying where is the firearm?" Make sure your hand is not in that area when you answer.
When I was LEO I was happy to see a CHL.

Thats on a 'need to know basis' list, with very few people having the 'need'....as many have said,it mostly depends on the conversation. If the conversation is about guns, crime, SD etc. and I'm comfortable enough with the surrounding people, then I'll usually answer truthfully.

If I'm not comfortable with them, I'll avoid the question, usually with a question.

Never had it happen, but if a stranger asked me 'out of the blue' I would be very suspicious of that person and tell them "none of your business" as I was putting distance between him/them and I.

I read quite a few of the posts on this subject and was both impressed and distressed about the answers to this question. There were very few posts that stated the most important thing about this question. I was taught in my CHL class that CHL holders are only legal as long as the weapon in concealed. If you show your weapon, or even tell someone that you are carrying a weapon, it is no longer concealed and therefore illegal. I have not read this statement in the actual legal code on the DPS website, but it makes sense that telling someone that you are carrying reveals the weapon (verbally).

Wow, old thread, but I'll play.
It would depend on the who the group is. Friends? Strangers at a Christmas party? I think there are a lot of variables.

Many states only stipulate that the gun should not be visible to the general public, or something to that effect. Telling someone should be completely okay, as long as it isn't perceived as a threat.

"What a rude question!" and then stare at them.

Actually, the only time I've been asked is at the gun range by the RSO, and I wasn't carrying at the time.
