Some thoughts on online ammo merchants...

I have been buying my ammo from two online companies, Midway and
Cabela's. The reality is that I will go with whoever has the ammo I want at the lowest price.

That being said, Midway ships much faster.
They both will stop sending you catalogs in the snail mail upon request.

One thing about Cabela's that I don't like is that you will wind up with
"tracking cookies". After visiting their site, ads from Cabela's featuring products you viewed will appear on some sites you visit. They can't turn that off on request.

Considering that most gun owners believe in freedom and privacy, I think this practice is going to turn off a lot of customers.

Just a heads up.

A good antivirus software should eliminate that problem.

My biggest beef with ammo sellers is, many suck you in with seemingly "low" prices, and then nail you for shipping at the end of the checkout process. They also wait until the order is complete to tell you that they are out of stock and youre now back ordered.

I prefer someone like ammoman, who tells you what the total cost is up front, and if its not in stock, you cant order it.

I cant tell you how many times Ive ordered ammo that was specifically stated as being available only to find in fact that it is not available.

And as stated above some will give you a great price on the ammo and then basically kill you on shipping.

I second using ammoman.com. Great company, great prices, and they usually have a good selection IN STOCK. If not, you know up front. I've used them dozens of times with no issues.

Georgia Arms is very often the lowest price. Plus, they are well known and known to produce good ammo.

I'd be shocked if either MidWay or Cabela's were ever cheapest.

Most of the tracking info is actually stored on your computer and you can delete it to foil the guerilla marketing efforts. Try this from Internet Explorer.

Tools --> Internet Options --> Browsing History
Then check the box "Delete browsing history on exit".

I bought some 9mm and 45acp from Palmetto Armory.

The .45 acp is WWB and the 9mm is Remington.

I do have an issue with the Remington. I bought 500 rounds in 2-250 round packs.

I went to the range on Monday and noticed that several ( as in more than 5 or 6 ) rounds had the bullets pushed well below factory standard OAL.

I don't have any measurements in front of me, but I am going to take the remaining rounds and look for the obviously short rounds.

What I do not know at this point is whether the lot of ammo I have is substandard and a cause for concern.

I want to look at all the rounds and then take that information to Remington and find out what is going on.

I normally stay away from Remington ammo and this incident does not inspire me to buy more.

The rounds are in plastic trays and are not bulk packed. I cannot see how shipping would have caused the bullets to shift.

It is possible there was a hiccup in the machinery. I will know more when I look at the rounds in the middle of the pack. in.

The rounds range from standard oal of 1.135 in. down to .975 in.

I have attached some photos.

I've had good luck with both Cabela's and CheaperThanDirt.com. Cabela's regular prices aren't great but sometimes their sales are (e.g., currently American Eagle .223 55g for $5.79 per 20). CTD is my go-to for most ammo, with Georgia Arms my #2. Both list shipping charges clearly and I've never found a listed item as "in stock" to not be.

Good price on the .223 I paid 7.50 for the same thing at Dick's and was pretty happy. Decent ammo too, it was pretty much on target for me.

That looks like a serious problem Geetarman. I've seen a little bit of that in some remington 250rd bulk packs that wern't seperated but your case is extreme. Imagine an inexperienced shooter getting ahold of that stuff .

I use Mozilla Firefox. On my box you go "edit" in the toolbar and select "preferences" in the drop down menu. Select "privacy" and "show cookies." You can delete selected cookies and you won't be tracked. You can also clear your browsing history from the same page.

peetzakilla, +1 on Georgia Arms. I've bought a bunch of their "Canned Heat." Last was 1000rds of 158gr .38 plated SWC for $240 (plus Shipping and tax, as I live in GA). Good ammo, good brass, and a nice ammo can to boot.

I'm driving to their showroom tomorrow, as I've just picked up some reloading gear, and they have the best prices on .357 cast bullets that I could find, too. Plan on picking up a few thousand 158 LSWC.

I have had purchases with other vendors run into the "backorder" issue before; it gets annoying.

That has not happened with Georgia Arms to date; their site has made it very clear when something has not been in stock.

Considering that most gun owners believe in freedom and privacy, I think this practice is going to turn off a lot of customers.

Most people don't care, or don't even notice that it's happening.

As others have said -
You can use browser privacy settings to prevent tracking cookies from being stored. Even better, is a good antivirus or network security program, that allows detailed management of every aspect of your navigation and history.

I did a whole spreadsheet when I was buying bulk for 9mm and 7.62x54r and I found that ammunitiontogo was the cheapest with shipping included. But man do they all get you on that shipping. CTD had the highest shipping on another order of things I got. I doubt if I will ever buy from them. Handgun related the ammo I bought for my XD9 is pretty good.

I think the shipping costs are less about sticking it to the buyer, and more about not losing money on the ORMD paperwork and actual costs to the retailers.

I've had very good luck with both Ammotogo and Georgia Arms. Ammo to go, will only advertise ammo that they have in stock, shipping charges are not to bad, and delivery times are good. Georgia Arms, great prices on range ammo, selection of .357 Magnum is somewhat limited, but what they offer is good, delivery is a little slow but for the price I'm Ok with that.

Graf,Ammoman,Georgia Arms

Georgia Arms makes good ammo;has great customer service if there's problem(UPS damaged a carton and about 150 rounds were lost and GA customer service couldn't have been nicer). The only problem is that shipping is high to my UPS zone.
Graf and Sons have a great selection and let you know what is in stock up front.Low prices and no shipping-just a small handling charge that is the same regardless of quantity. They have also sent some free Birchwood targets as a premium a few times.Nice.They have any caliber you'd need.
Ammoman has fast service, free shipping, but a limited selection of calibers and brands.I have gotten some great deals with them.
