"Soft" shooting .45 round for the Girlfriend?

She might surprise you and love the way it shoots as is. Let her try it before you try to soften it up. An all steel 45 takes a lot of the recoil.

Buy plain old WWB FMJ or similar. Don't assume it is too much gun for 'the little lady' to handle - worry more about her enjoying it so much that you need to take out a second mortgage to keep her in ammo!

Did someone say "light recoiling .45"? That will summon me, with a link to www.frangiblebullets.com faster than Wildalaska to a Bersa thread (I kid, I kid).

Frangible bullets sells rounds from two manufacturers, International Cartridge Corporation, and then a more affordable round from Wagner AccuSwage. Both rounds are made out of a sintered copper/tin alloy, which means that they're 30% lighter while taking up the same volume as a traditional round. For example, Wagner makes a 140 grain .45 ACP round that's loaded to about 950 FPS, which has the lightest recoil of any .45 ACP I've ever pulled the trigger on; honestly it's like shooting a medium .40.

I used Wagner ammo a lot for practice in .40, their 125 grain round is a favorite "Cheater" load for IDPA or USPSA Production division for me, as it meets the power factor but has minimal recoil. Check out their reduced weight loads in .45 ACP.

Definitely.

I like the 200gr SWC because A) It leaves nice round holes in the target and B) the lighter recoil helps when you're shooting a hundred rounds at a whack, I don't care who you are.

Wow guys/gals thanks for all the info, I'm sure I am just beng overly cautious.
The only thing I am concerned about is the slide movement. She didn't like the Taurus pt92 when I had it for that reason. She loves the GP100 w/ .38s though. We'll see how she does with it. I just wanted to grab a box of something a little more mild in case she wasn't a fan of the 230gr. ball. I would hate to have to tell her "next time". I just wanted to be prepared for her sake. Thanks again.

Do not have her shoot off-hand. Show her how the Weaver stance is used with left foot forward, push-pull with right and left hands interlocked to control recoil.

You might try some Speer Short Barrel .357 magnum 135 grain GDHP ammunintion in the GP100 ... a soft shooting .357 magnum.
