"Society made me do it"

Who cares what the nutjob says. I'm only interested in "temporary insanity" if it is something a jury buys. This guy can claim he's Jesus - it doesn't matter.

Yes, that's important to remember. He can quote the TV as much as he wants, but who is going to buy that in the real world?

Monty Python used to do a sketch in which a body is discovered and the murderer is found, but at the end of the sketch he says "All right, I done it, but it weren't my fault, see? Society made me do it."

"Right!" the cops cry, and they promptly round up everyone else on the stage while leaving the murderer to relax in his chair.
"Come on, then, let's go. You! You're part of society, ain't you? Along with you, then! Got a lot of people to arrest today, you know . . . ."

Problem being, that's the way the British criminal justice system really works.

To those who think the criminal should die even if the officer does not-

The punishment should fit the crime. One of the reasons we have laws is to protect the criminals from over-the-top revenge. This should be eye-for-eye punishment, not life-for-eye. I think a more appropriate punishment in the case of the trooper living would be for the criminal to pay for all medical bills, plus any income lost while the trooper was being treated, plus some extra. If he cannot pay, put him to hard labor for the state, with the money saved by not having to pay an employee going to the trooper.

But then you put someone deserving out of a job.

Whether the trooper dies or not makes no difference to the fact that the perp was trying to kill the trooper. Attempted murder is just as bad as murder. Attempted rape is just as bad as rape.

Is this guy a better person because the trooper didn't die?
Is he worse if the trooper dies?

What kind of person he is is not the issue. We don't punish people based on what kind of person they are. We punish them for what they do.

The hot seat - or hard labor.

Prison labor already takes the jobs of many people and contributes to driving down the wages of everyone else in the private sector. Instead, let them drive down the cost of publicly funded roadbuilding and repair by doing some of the things usually done these days with expensive heavy equipment - with the pick and shovel instead.
