Trooper Remains In Critical Condition After I-470 Shooting

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Missouri highway trooper remains in critical condition after being shot nine times during a weekend traffic stop.

Tommy R. Rollins Jr., 26, of Grandview, is accused of shooting trooper Brandon Brashear after the officer pulled him over in Lee's Summit early Saturday morning.

Colleagues of Brashear told KMBC's Bev Chapman that they train to expect the unexpected.

"We don't treat any stop as a low-risk stop, because you just never know what's going to happen," said Sgt. John Hotz, with the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Officials said Brashear had stopped a motorist on Interstate 470, but the driver jumped from the car and started firing, chasing the trooper into the median.

"(Brashear) was doing everything just like he should have at the time of the stop," Hotz said.

Rollins told reporters he was temporarily insane when he fired the shots.

"I didn't mean to shoot the man. It's like I said, it was temporary insanity -- wasn't even thinking when I did it, that's it," Rollins said. "Didn't mean to do what I did. Society is what caused me to do what I did, and that's all I can tell you."

KMBC reported that Rollins was a janitor who worked for the Raytown School District until October 2004. He was reportedly unable to find work since then. Brashear's condition has not changed much since Saturday's shooting.

"We're optimistic and hopeful. When you consider the situation, we feel very fortunate," Hotz said.

Court records show that Rollins admitted to shooting Brashear and that he led police to the assault weapon used. Rollins was charged with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action.

THIS is exactly why we are in the shape we are today. NOBODY takes responsibility for ANYTHING. Even worse, we allow that to happen. Blame this. blame that, etc. Look at all the wacko laws that get proposed. Look how many people expect someone to wipe their butt, do this-that/the-other-thing for them.
This clown INTENDED to harm someone from the get-go. (His boss, who had fired him). The Trooper just had the bad luck to make a traffic stop on him.
Now he claims "I'm not crazy now, but I was when I shot him"....
Guess who'll foot the bill for his "experts" who will flock to the case......
That's right, YOU!

prayer to the trooper, hopefully, he will survive.

heres hoping the state is "temporarily insane" and they execute him should the trooper not survive.

True Justice:

taking this jerk off out and putting two in his head in front of the court house, or hang him

Serriously, this guy does not deserve to live. He is the scum of the earth.

I Sure hope that trooper pulls through..

The sad thing is that since this guy has probably never had an original thought in his worthless life, he didn't make this stuff up himself. He heard it somewhere else, and remembered to say it this time because he knows that sometimes it works.

"Society made me do it", how the #*^@ did society make him do this. Hope he gets what he deserves, but if he goes to prison he'll be praised by the rest of the prison population  . Godspeed to the trooper.

Prayers for the trooper...

Insanity. And the "assault weapon" mentioned - wonder what kind of gun it really was since there's no way we can actually trust the press's description.

Give him what he gave...........eye for an eye

;) It is too bad the idiot didn't have an empty pistol pointing it at the folks whom took his worthless but into custody. It would have done away with any need for further tax payers assistance. (so to speak) No trial and no life sentence needed.... I hope the lawmen pulls through and makes a full recovery....

I don't consider myself blood thirsty but seems like death by same means you commit a crime seems fair and reasonable terms?.... Just my thoughts...

So this guy has justified shooting a cop because he was not in a "correct state of mind" known to some as temp. insanity. So the Marines/Soldiers/Sailors/Airman that go on a deployment into a hostile country (Iraq/Afgan) and come back after seeing some truly horrible stuff (like a buddy being blown to bits) should be able to commit a crime and then claim temp insanity to get off? Come on. I suffer from PTSD and I can make a difference from what I feel about a situation and what I do in a situation. Just because I may not be right in the head at the time does not give me a good excuse to start shooting at somebody. Doesn't this guy understand that we all have a bad day that can borderline on the worst that could happen to us? So you lost your job. Pick up your head and go out to find another one. Don't wait for it to be given to you. Society owes you nothing that you have not earned.

1 2nd the vote

I'm with those who agree he should be killed. But i think he should get it even (god willing, if the officer survives. To take it further the officer should be alowed to shoot the ****er himself.

My butt made me go take a poo today. I had no say in the matter. What do I do if my butt tells me to take a poo on this guy's car.

Prayers to the Trooper.

"temporary insanity" is the hardest thing to prove (by the defense) in a court of law, it's not going to fly.

If the Trooper dies, then I say death penality.

It's like I said, it was temporary insanity

Well, then, instead of your life inprisonment, you can substitute the stay at a mental health facility.

That's the way I think it oughta work in these cases, anyways. If the insanity card is brought out, then the sentence is simply moved over to spending time in a mental health facility instead of a regular prison.

put the temp insane in a mental institute and you still pay out your rear to keep them alive. and you pay for their meds, too. boy isn't that great, kill somebody and let the tax paying, law abiding citizens pay for your government vacation in a big play pen. cost less to use an old oak tree and a rope. they are reusable. but for those opposed, lets reinstate the chain gang and let the prisons earn some money and possibly go into the black again. then i know that my hard earned dollars aren't supporting the criminals.
