So the 642 is really "all that", huh?

Well, I'm baaaack!!

Here's what I did...

My birthday was Wednesday, and my wife kept asking me what I wanted... NOT a clue.

So I go back to the shop... shop owner has no problem at all taking the P11 back, and giving me FULL STICKER PRICE on credit ($269) !!!

But then, he says the difference between the two is the sticker price of the 642 minus the sticker price of the P11... $200 difference. :( Got a bright idea... How about that 442? $10 cheaper  ! NEVER MIND! Back to the 642...

Put it on layaway, add $50 to the total... Call wife... "Honey, I know what I want for my birthday... " Wife says "OK, put it on my card... see you when I get home"
What a wife!

I am very satisfied with it, but it's not nearly as pretty as lendringser's... His looks more polished... cleaner lines and such.

JohnKirk - Thanks for the tip... it's a 642-2
(silly lock thingie on the side)

Ladies, Gentlemen, THANK YOU for your assistance! Now it's off to browse for an ankle holster. I wonder if DeSantis will swap me the P11 Nemesis I JUST ordered for a J frame one??

** DeSantis update ** I called DeSantis, to see if the order had shipped, hoping I could switch models before it went out. She said "Yes sir, your N38 - J frame shipped on the 24th".
Fate? Or perhaps, the P11 just fits in the J-frame Nemesis. Either way, I am SOOOO darned excited right now!

:D

Ok, Ok... I give.

642, $333, NIB, gunbroker/ak-47man.com

This has to stop, three weapons in a week (this 642, M-N m39 and m44).

Ok, now to buy some ammo and a holster... :D

Onslaght, Franklins in Athens (GA) had 642's for $360 each about 2 months ago. I bought two and got them for $350 each, (NIB). I guess they still have them. I have dumped my other carry pistols and use the 642 full time.

I got mine this summer for $339 plus a box of ammo and a cheap nylon holster. The holster sucked but the 642 was good enough for me to finally retire my Colt Agent (although the Agent is so cool it still comes out for special occasions).

My local gunshop that the S&W 642 in stock, and on sale right now
for $339.88 + tax.

Ala Dan,

That is about what I paid for this 640-1 a few years ago. Good price.

Ummm, yes I know. I am looking for wood, just haven't found what I want yet.

That's quite a bit more than around here

I live in Utah. Three local gunshops feature this exact model (Smith 642) for $350 give or take $10. FWIW.

A 642 with an old feel great grip

Take a look at a really great picture sent me my a nice fellow with one of my oldies but goodies 1960's grips on his 642.

Mr. Jones, those Fitz grips look familiar. In my formative years, reading "Cooper on Handguns," I seem to recall Chairman Jeff pictured wearing a S&W Model 60 with similar grips. I thought then they were very nice, and this confirms it wasn't just my youthful enthusiasm! They are nice!

OK, back to topic: the M642.

I have three "regular carry" handguns, under the auspices of my CWP.

#1: Kimber Ultra CDP in .45ACP. Excellent sights (easily acquired & tritium), crisp trigger and ergonomic grip frame combine to offer excellent accuracy out to 50 yards. The .45 cartridge is controllable and comfortingly powerful. Fast & consistent reloads (from 2 spare magazines I also carry). It goes with me in a kydex hip holster about 5% of the time (when I'm out at night, wandering the malls with my wife, etc.).

#2: NAA Black Widow .22WMR (STOP LAUGHING!!). When the choice is the BW or nothing . . . It offers good accuracy out to 15 yards (I haven't tried it at longer range). Stopping power? Ehhhh, don't ask. However, CCI Maxi Mag +V ammo at least offers sufficient velocity to ensure adequate penetration. If I can't win, maybe I can stop my assailant from winning! Reloads? If I don't settle the issue with 5 rounds, I'm outta luck. Carried maybe 5% of the time, when I see absolutely no alternative.

#3: M642. Accuracy quite sufficient at 25 yards; very fast to deploy at point blank range (can even be fired from the pocket at contact range). Adequate ( ) stopping power. Can be carried easily & constantly in a jacket or pants pocket. Offers ability to be drawn surreptitiously & concealed in the hand when walking through darkened parking lots, etc. Carried about 90% of the time. 'Nuff said.

Over the years, I've decided the .38 snub offers a nearly ideal balance of speed, accuracy, power and convenience. Nothing less is really comparable, and larger arms may not offer much real advantage. The 642 is an excellent specimen (lightweight, stainless, hammerless). Just my opinion. :D

scbair,

Do you use a pocket holster when carrying your 642? I've been looking around and haven't arrived at a model which does it for me yet. I hate to carry things in my pocket (even keys), and what I'm looking for is an ultra thin pocket holster.

If I can't find something that pleases, I'll just put it on my hip, as usual.

Do you use a pocket holster when carrying your 642?

I use an el-cheapo Uncle Mike's pocket holster with my 442. It's thin, keeps the dust bunnies out of the works, and keeps the pistol upright and oriented in the pocket.

Joseph, Tamara pegged it (for now . . .). I, too, use a synthetic/fabric pocket holster from Uncle Mike's. Mine's grown sorta threadbare, though, and I've ordered a leather pocket holster from Hedley Holsters (www.hedleyholsters.com). It hasn't yet arrived, but I'll try to post some info after I've broken it in. :D

My two cents worth --- Any of these concealed hammer J-frames are great CC tools... the Airweight and variants not recommended for +P, but on the other hand , if the gun saves your life in a five-round gunfight, so what? All my aluminum frame guns have suffered discoloration of the anodized finish in "close to body" carry, as in a pocket, blue carbon steel guns rust. My 640, all stainless J-frame is impervious to being soaked in condensed perspiration for hours on end, as will be any gun carried close in our hot Arizona environment. A Kramer pocket holster keeps the piece butt up in either strong-side jeans hip pocket or in front pocket of dress slacks. Lightweight alloy frames for dress slacks, Stainless for jeans. Any suitable anti-personnel load is difficult to manage in these little guns, the sights are marginal, but you can't find a more potent package in this size envelope... For model # markings, swing open the crane and find model and serial # engraved or etched on frame under the crane hinge.

That brings up a point on loads. I've heard the older snubbies had trouble with +P loads as a steady diet, but that the new ones do just fine. What's the current thinking. I've read that the .38 lswchp +P is the round to go with. The S&W website states the normal load is +P.

Also, regarding the aluminum and stainless, which parts of the 642 are aluminum and which parts are stainless.
