I have no problems owning an ugly pistol or semi-automatic rifle. But I just can't see owning an ugly bolt action or lever action... or an ugly revolver... or an ugly double barrel shot gun (not that there are many of those).
I don't understand the point of view that a synthetic stock is easier to care for than a walnut stock... or that it is more durable. It is less expensive I will grant you that.
My grandfather had a browning auto-5 20 gage and a Winchester 70 that both saw 30+ years of deep woods, swamp, corn field, and duck blind hunting. After 30 years, they had some wear marks, and a few dings, but they really looked and shot great.
I guess if you use your rifle as a shovel, or a sledge hammer, the synthetic stock might be useful... or if you leave it sitting in the bottom of a boat in 5 inches of bilge water... but if you can resist the urge to abuse your rifle, a walnut stock will serve you well.
