So it has come to this?

That's what you said, but indulge my curiousity. What other "big sham propogated by the GOP folks" led to your lack of surprise?

Well, nothing in particular. I'm an equal-opportunity hater - I hate both major parties perfectly equally. :) I believe they're both EASILY capable of such a deceptive dirty trick - there's virtually nothing they won't do. So I'm just saying that it wouldn't surprise me at all - WHY do I actually think that's its probably more likely a sham, perpetrated by Repubs? Because the content is so blatently offensive that I don't think any candidate in a million years would actually use such a flier that would clearly do them more harm than good in the long run, so it would have to be either a dirty trick sham, or a flier not actually approved by the campaign. I have no clue which one - but I have learned that so many lies and half-truths are spouted by both sides, that you have to carefully analyze what they say. Do I think it could be someone who WORKS for the campaign that made it? Possibly, but it could easily be a sham too. Do I think that some people who worked for the campaign had it in their bags and was handing it out? Maybe - who knows. But was it approved by the candidate or the campaign officials? Extraordinarily unlikely. I'm just lookin for proof, and for people to make statements that can be backed up and verified, not some vague BS like "then someone brought it to me" - wth - that doesn't prove anything, and he clearly WOULD have said that someone from the campaign gave it to him, had that been the case, and clearly WOULD have said that the person who gave it to them said or alleged that they got it from a campaign worker had this been the case. Such a lack of an allegation is quite telling. Now, did I go a little out of my way to be an anti-repub devil's advocate, so to speak. yes, of course I did. Why? Because I can't let the 100% tow-the-party-line, limbaugh ditto-heads rant on and on about every little subject as if the repubs can do no wrong. I won't stand for it, and thankfully neither will people like Handy, Microbalrog etc. Yes I respect the enthusiasm of Fred, gburner et al, but on non-gun issues, and even some gun issues, I will not let this board become a simple regurgitation of Republican ideals across the board. It's misleading to those in the otherwise liberal camp who might be lurking and an asset to the RKBA. BTW, I missed the excitement of the thread. Oh well, it's cleaned up now, whatever it was.

Another example here.

Of course I'm sure that there will be those who wish to characterize the N.A.A.C.P. as bi-partisan, or even non-partisan, but hey, I need a good laugh. :D

I can't believe that anyone would actually give this any credence. Someone in high school made this and managed to get it to circulate - no candidate is so stupid as to make this a part of his campaign. It isn't even executed very well.

The only conspiracy here is how anyone could become convinced in the first place that this is official campaign material. The internet rumor mill produces hundreds of these kind of things a week - they're virtually all false.

I recommend that before anyone gets spooled up about some Fire Dept. not flying the flag, or something else dumb like this one you check it out at www.snopes.com or a similar debunking site. Or hey, get on the phone yourself.

Well after several recent blatant examples of partisanship by Snopes I think I will ignore them and any claims they make. They've never been exactly infallible anyway and their blatant dislike of Bush has really wrecked their credibility now.

But, back to the actual issue:

Bush 'Retarded' Ad Causes Firestorm

What some might consider an offensive political flier has caused quite a stir.

The ad shows a photo of a Special Olympics athlete running a race. Superimposed over his face is President Bush's. On the flier is the text: "Voting for Bush is Like Running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded."

Click here to see the flier.

Copies of the flier were said to have been found in the office trash of Tennessee state Democratic Rep. Craig Fitzhugh.

Fitzhugh denies the allegation.

"First of all, it wasn't in my headquarters, it was in the local Democratic headquarters that has other candidates there as well, and we don't know who left the flier there," Fitzhugh told FOX News on Friday.

"We do know that the volunteers in the campaign headquarters took it out on the street in a city-owned trash container and threw it away," he added, "and shortly thereafter a gentleman came by and retrieved it and took it to [his opponent's] headquarters, and that's when it was distributed worldwide over the Internet without checking with anybody, and that's when I was accused of having something to do with it.

"The facts clearly show now that's not the case, but the damage has been done to me and my family," he continued.

Fitzhugh's Republican challenger, Dave Dahl, said he didn't believe his opponent personally produced the flier or had anything to do with distributing it.

"The fact still remains that this flier was in his campaign headquarters and someone distributed the flier," Dahl told FOX News. "It's an egregious thing to portray these special-needs kids in this way."

Fitzhugh said Dahl and other Republicans distributed the flier without any formal inquiry as to whether Fitzhugh had anything to do with it.

"I did not, and would not in any way, have anything to do with such a terrible piece of literature," Fitzhugh repeated. "Not even literature. A piece of trash."

Dahl denied circulating the flier, saying it was already out and about. Four different copies of it were sent to the Lauderdale County Republican headquarters, as well, he said.

"We began checking to see where it emanated from, and everyone said that it came from the Lauderdale County Democratic headquarters, which Mr. Fitzhugh shares," Dahl said. "It's less than 60 feet from the bank where he's the chairman of the board."

More as I come up with it.

Hey! Somebody else figured it out! :)

I thought I was the only one. Mention anything bad about Snopes around here and you are likely to get jumped on.

As for the flyer, it sounds to me like the kind of thing that a low level campaign staffer would do. Not approved by the candidate, probably not condoned by the candidate.

Emphasis on the "low level". :barf:

I posted Snopes as an example. There are several such sites. The point is to check this kind of stuff before you fly off the handle.

OLLLDDDDD Joke

'Voting for George Bush is like running in the Special Olympics...even if you win, you're still retarded.'.
That is so old. I have seen it in tag lines all over forums except the true quote is:

"Winning a flame war on the internet is like winning a race in the Special Olympics: you may feel like hot s--t, but you're still a retard."
