So Is .357 Sig Only Being Shot For FUN ??

I've noticed a distinct trend of late, both here on these esteemed pages and in the world beyond the net.

Almost everyone I know appears to have resolved the 9mm Magnum (sorry .357 Sig) versus .40 S&W question for themselves. They have a P239 or similar for the .357 and they shoot it at the range only for fun. Comments are typically "WOOOHOOOO the blast of the thing" and "GEEEEZZUUUZZ they could hear that in the next state". When I ask what PD round they carry in the gun the reply is more or less, oh I don't, I take the .40 when there's a need for carry.

So has anyone else encountered the ".357 Sig is only for fun" phenomenon ?

Regards,

Mike H

I have posted several times about the fun of the .357 SIG. I don't carry any handgun for CCW.

Sig P229 12 rounds of 125gr Speer Gold Dot JHP for me. I don't feel that it is just a fun round for the range. the muzzle blast does not bother me and the muzzle flash is not a problem with the Gold Dots as far as I am concerned. G.R.

The .357 SIG is, to me, an interesting and fairly impressive cartridge. But if I was shooting it, it'd probably be for fun. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

OTOH, I've heard that Texas state troopers use this cartridge in their service pistols. If true, I believe it would reflect the serious purpose of the cartridge as an LE tool.

I own both the 40s&w and the 357sig. 135 grn loads in the 40 and 125 grn loads in the sig have about the same blast as far as I can tell, but I am only shoot reloads. I will say the sig is much more fun to shoot, but mainly because of the platform at sig 229sport.

P229 Sport and 357 SIG, Perfection!

From the comparison I have seen between the .40 and .357, it seems the .40 may be better for SD, and .357 may be better for LEO. The .40 has plenty of penetration for me and I like the larger bullet, but LE has a greater chance of needing to penetrate an object prior to hitting the perp(glass, door, etc.), lending need to a deeper penetrating round.

I plan on a .357 barrel, but just for the range. (unless someone can convince me otherwise, I'm always willing to change my mind if the evidence suggests I should)

Just my thoughts,

Sig 229 .40 - When you care enough to shoot the very best!

I carry a Glock 32 (same compact as the G19 or G23) with a full capacity mag that holds 14+1 rounds on tap.

It is amazingly accurate (one inch groups at 25 yards)(The gun could shoot better, but that is about the best I can do offhand, open sights).

I carry it for defense with 125gr Gold Dots or 125gr Corbon.
Corbon is more often for the city, and Gold Dots for the country (animals etc).

I don't get any muzzle flash from premium rounds, and strangely, I don't find it to be any louder than a 9mm, even without ear protection.

The .357 Sig is a great round for both personal defense and for hunting and outdoor protection for me.

Derglockenpooper I am interested in why you choose to use the Corbon in the city and the gold dots in the country. Do you find the GD round is over penatrative? I have never tried the Corbon 357sig What is it that you like about it over the others?

From the latest version of "Why Consider a 357 Sig" article on Pistol Pete's Page ( http://home.earthlink.net/~petej88/ , and I quote:

18. Many U.S. Citizens have adopted the 357 Sig for sporting and/or self defense purposes. Some simply use the 357 Sig because it's a simple drop-in barrel replacement for their beloved .40's.

Some Agencies now using the 357 Sig:

Delaware State Police (First to adopt the 357 Sig)
Texas DPS (Largest Dept to use the 357 Sig)
Dallas, Texas Police (Now authorizes the 357 Sig)
U.S. Secret Service
New Mexico State Police

Yes, the .357 is fun. It's not nearly as loud when you're the one whose shooting it. Others near you may jump out of their shoes.

I've been shooting and carrying the 357 Sig for a number of months now, carried and shot .45 prior to the .357 Sig.
I don't know where all the "hype" of muzzel blast and noise came from, maybe it is there to some extent, maybe it's not, but I've never noticed it from my HK Compact.
My son has been shooting the 357 Sig since it first became available from HK (he made me a convert) and while I was still shooting my .45 he would be in the lane next to me with is 357 Sig and I did not notice any excessive flash or noise. I can only conclude that people equate the 357 Sig's muzzel noise and blast to the .357 Mag's muzzel flash and noise, this just isn't so. (I also shoot my wife's .357 Mag on occasion so I can speak from experiance.)
Is it as accurate as everyone claims? I find it so.
that's my .02

I have a G31 and a G33 and I carry one of the two almost all the time. I occasionally still throw the G22 in a paddle holster just to get it out of storage but I prefer the .357's for carry.

I just bought a G32 the other day but I haven't had a chance to wring it out yet and I won't carry it until I do. I wouldn't be surprised if the G32 puts the others on stand down after it gets some rounds through it, though. :)

I started with the 357 sig as a fun cartridge but after fireing it I soon sold all my .40's but my p99 which they don't make in 357 sig yet. The 357 sig is better than the 40 and 9mm in every way. (power, accuracy feed reliability)

I intend to go into harms way.

I personally carry the Glock 33 as a conceal carry piece, on duty I carry the Glock 21 as my Dept. issues it. I think that the .357 SIG cartridge is just too expensive for some people to afford to practice with, Only my opinion...

Also in Virginia, the Richmond City Police have switched to the .357 Sig.

Add Alameda County, CA (dropped Glock 40s for SIG 357s), Morristown NJ, Springfield IL...

The 357 Gold Dots go really deep in the gel, but seem to be staying in people, expanding to around .60 caliber too.

Evan Marshall is a fan, says he just got a 239, will carry the 125 Federal load, cuzz it is edging out the Gold Dot from what he sees.

I've shoot the 357 in Glocks, SIGs, and USPs. Like the SIGs best, then USPs, then Glock.

Gotta admit, I carry the 40 w 155/165s. :)

Thanks "fun gun guy" & "brokenarrow". I'll add these agencies to my list as mentioned above. Keep 'em coming! When the list gets too long, I'll stop and just say, "Yes, a lot of agencies use the 357 Sig" :)

You guys who don't notice any difference in the sound level of the Sig .357 should not bother getting a hearing test. You would be wasting your money. I have had people come from the other end of the range to find out what I was shooting. If you do not notice the blast in the day time, try it at night or at dusk. It matches my .357 mag out of the same length barrel. I do not carry the P239 in .357 Sig, because of my concern for overpenetration. I really like the round. It is fun to shoot because it shoots flat, makes lots of noise, has a snappy recoil, but not punishing like the .357 mag. I do not have a .40 so I can not compare those two, but my .45 full length does not come close. Now with my compact 1911's with hot loads, there is similar blast, but the recoil is different, and the sound is not as great. The only weapon that comes close to drawing the attention that my Sig does is the .44 mag, the .45 super 1911, and the desert eagle .50 I shot recently.
