So how much do you spend on ammo?

Samuel2001 :

Not much these days, since I cant find much at reasonable prices!

What color is the sky in your World?

I am also in the $80 - $120 a month range. That is, when I can find what I am looking for. There are only two stores in this town that sell ammuniton.

Well nix that, I'm now over budget. Bought two boxes of wolf, and a box of Magtec for the .45, a box for the 7.62 revolver, and a box of 22LR at just over $100. I guess I'm eating ramen noodles this month.

I have to wonder what bills are not being paid to shell that kind of money on one caliber.

Some people actually have money. There are people who could pay all their bills, early even, and still spend $5000 a month on ammo if they so desired. Just because you or I would be in debtors prison (or at least the doghouse) for spending that kind of cash doesn't mean that there aren't people who can do it without blinking an eye.

I try to shoot weekly, and right now spend only about $55-$60/mo on ammo because...

...almost everything I need to practice, I practice at home through dry fire drills and/or use of a quality air gun...

...almost everything else can be done at the range with one of my .22s...

...and because I reload the rest, which is the little centerfire I do shoot (averaging about 50 rounds per weekly range trip).

well i havn't spent much lately. i guess those that can afford 60,000 rounds are getting it before it's available to me. but when i can find a box or 2 at a local store at a reasonable price i will buy them. i got a 100 rds of 45 today but don't hate the player...hate the game.

Spent $530 yesterday for 1,000 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 135 grain .38 +P's.

That's 20 boxes of 50 at $26.50/box.

Have you seen what 20 round boxes of Gold Dot's are selling for?

That's actually reasonable in this climate.

At least you can get it!:D:D:D

Last year I spent enough money on this hobby that I could have made a double mortgage payment every other month. So given the fact that ammo is hard to find and expensive when I do find it, I am sitting back a bit and watching others play the game. But I will be making those double mortgage payments in the mean time.

Si vis pacem, para bellum!

Let's see, this year I bought 5 cans of M1 ammo and a case of M1 Carbine at the CMP South Store. Bought a case of Prvi in .223 and one in 7.62 X 54R. Also the case of 7.62 X 39 in Wolf. I try not to shoot surplus anymore. I've shot a case of Wolf Match Extra in 22LR and a case of Federal Champion 510, also in 22LR this year, plus a couple of bricks of Eley Team. Also there was the case of Federal of M193.

No way am I tallying up the costs of all the ammo. It could get back to my wife. Since I buy just a case at a time, it doesn't seem quite as bad. The trouble is that I'm running out of M1 Carbine ammo and CMP is now out of it. Surprising how much ammo can go thru a M1 Carbine with 30 round clips, especially with friends shooting it. Also getting short on .357 mag.

I'm also handloading 45 Colt, 44-40, 38-55 and 45-70 and about to start on 6BR. May load more .223 since I have the stuff. Oh well, I don't drink or smoke or chase women.

PS, I've also already shot most of this, so it's not hoarding. I will have to try to buy more.

My take?

With Obama and the legislative majority, the antigunnners ammo will remain in short supply. He's shifty and in addition to gun restrictions will also want laws to limit primer and gunpowder life. Expect mandated technology to be able to trace bullets, ala California etc

Any law he puts on the book will bankrupt the ammomakers if at all possible. That's not legally directly confronting the 2nd amendment.

More people will get into reloading and components will continue to be high.

I say hold off on ammo but buy as much ammo components as you can put away.

Too much

I only shoot once a month now because of the high ammo price (and I can't find them).

I asked the sales person at Academy how often do you get a shipment of ammo in and on what day does it come? He answered once a week but I do not know what day it will be here.

I read a thread where the poster stated he just bought 60+ K rounds of 7.62x39 for $119 per thousand. Thats over $6600. I have to wonder what bills are not being paid to shell that kind of money on one caliber. If if the better half knew I spent that kind money on ammo she would have a s*** fit. So wonder what the average person is paying for ammo these days.

How do you know he wasn't in the business of selling ammo? If I could afford a deal like that I certainly would buy it also and sell some at a reasonable profit. Then the greadier dealers would quickly buy all of it from me and eliminate the lower priced competition then fix the price at 2.5-3 times what they payed for it and sell it to people stupid enough to pay their price. Where did he find that much ammo for that price?

To answer your question on how much I spend, I don't buy ammo unless I happen to find it at Walmart or on line for a good price. Even then I only buy it when I'm running low on ammo. I refuse to pay prices inflated 2-3 times what I can get the same ammo for at Walmart or a reputable on line dealer and so far checking Walmart often has yielded enough ammo for me. Except for .380 so I don't shoot it anymore.

I have also found a few local gun shops that don't try to inflate their prices beyond what they would have charged before the buying panic. They will definitely get my money again and the greedier ones won't. I have also been skipping a lot of gun shows because of the large crowds and high prices.
