Many airports reserve the right to search cars for security reasons.
Bob Hope Airport recently added this:
The most notable new security measure applies to vehicle parking near the terminal – specifically Short Term and Valet Parking.
All vehicles in these areas will now be inspected. All patrons will be asked for permission to open trunks and compartments so that a visual inspection may be performed. If you do not desire to have your vehicle inspected, you may use remote economy lots A, B, and C as a parking alternative.
Other measures to keep in mind:
The loading and unloading of passengers is all that will be allowed at the curb in front of the main terminal.
This restriction will be strictly enforced, and absolutely no parking or waiting will be allowed. Any unattended vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense.
All luggage is subject to search.
So, before we can say whether the search was legal, we need to know exactly where he was and what he was doing. He may have been in an area where searches fall under the airport policy which would make it legal.
If not in an area where the above applies, maybe he was acting in a manner that caused the officer some concern for his safety or the safety of others. That can lead to a search also.
