Sniper vs. Sporter rifle for tactical use?

Will a Remington 700 BDL do for Police tactical shooting...

NO!!!!

Tactical rifles are designed (heavy free-floated barrel, precision trigger, durable quality optics, etc) for one purpose...

Placing the FIRST shot EXACTLY where the shooter intends it to go.

They are not built for groups. They are designed to have repeatable nail hitting accuracy when needed.

A standard BDL is not capable of that period.
There is no "almost" good enough when someones life is depending on that precision shot.

If you want to ask the people that actually DO this stuff for a living go to SNIPER COUNTRY (http://www.snipercountry.com)

"...They are not built for groups. They are designed to have repeatable nail hitting accuracy when needed..."

Seems contradictory to me.

"...There is no "almost" good enough when someones life is depending on that precision shot..."

Then save the hi tech rifle money and spend it on teachin the sidearm equiped troops proper and safe gun handling......and marksmanship.

Sam, I think Snapsho7 may be referring to the "accuracy versus repeatability" arguement (which does have merit).

Accuracy is being able to place a bullet where you want it to hit (POA), while repeatability ("good groups") really has nothing to do with accuracy per se.

A "good group" could very well be a foot from where you wanted it to be (sight adjust, etc. could correct for this however).

Ideally, a rifle would do both.

If a rifle does not have good "repeatability" as in good group shooting. It cannot and will not have good "accuracy" ability to shot at poa.
It takes both an good grouping rifle and a rifle set up and properly sighted and propely used.
I guess one maight say that technically one has nothing to do with the other, but one cannot do or be one with without the other

GOSH!!!!!!!!!!

Greg, Celt, Rube, ROB, CS158, man what a world of talent.........BUT, sure am glad I MISSED this thread!!!!!!!:D

I think what Snapsho7 meant is that for sniper applications, the cold shot is much more important than the rifle's ability to deliver consistent follow up shots.

Another advantage of the "tactical" rifles is it is heavier. Most tactical rifles are glass bedded, have heavy barrels and stocks. THis allows for faster follow up shots because there is less recoil and thus less shift in POA between shots.

Hi all,

As I am kinda new to the subject of "Tactical Rifles", I am seeking advice. I have for many years wanted to own a "Tack Driver" of a rifle (of course I have to learn the "in's and out's). HOWEVER, being on a VERY limited budget, is it possible to IMPROVE/BUILD upon something in the order of a Remingon 700 BDL or a heavy barrel SAVAGE 110,112, or a VARMINT Rifle of some type etc. I don't know if it is possible if this idea would compete with the likes of a Remington Police LTR or ??? What is considered good accuracy? Is .308 the way to go or should one consider .300 Win Mag or 7mm Mag? Thanks for any help.

Hardball,

Either a Remington or Savage can be a basis for a good upgrade. However, you will find more options and knowledgable smiths with the Remington.

Hardball,

Far as caliber goes = depends on what you want it to do.

Plenty of tack-driving calibers that won't boot you to death affter firin' off 100+ rounds from a bench or bipod.
.22-250, .223, .222, .220 Swift, .22 PPC - many more & into the 6mm class.

If you really don't expect to drop the hammer on a perp, targets die quite willingly with the smaller calibers & you don't have to put up with nearly as much recoil.

For a "sniper rifle," the .308-class is probably the caliber arena to start in or around for anti-people.

Far "upgrade" goes, I'm still shooting a mid-60s stock Rem 700 .22-250 VarmitMaster (heavy barrel) that has been "upgraded" by glass-bedding & free-floating the action/barrel = ~$15 worth of bedding compound. Things still shoots <1/4" 3 shot groups at 100 yds (& POA), but sometimes does throw a flier to 1/2" or so.

Not too shabby for an off-the-shelf rifle with perhaps 15-20,000 rounds through the original barrel.

Thank you gentelman,

for answering my questions. Tonight I spoke with a gentleman at my Gun Club who shoot 600 yard matches with Iron sights with competition grade AR15's. This is very interesting! He made a very good case for this round and rifle. I might be interested in trying this in the future. Now...if I only had about $1500.00 for a new Competition Rifle!

Black sniper rifles fired by crew cut boys and girls in black BDU's are just another example of our allowing local police agencies to become more and more like the military. The mindset of the two should be 180 out, but them seem to be going in a common direction. Mass firepower directed at citizens, with 'the best possible weapons', is, or should be, a scary thing. I shoot just as well as the SWAT boys out at the local range. Two weeks ago, my old Mannlicher-Schoenauer .270 out shot the black clad contingent's .308 black synthetic stocked Remington easily.

Tshoes, I sorta wish I had...:)

Hey, on this accuracy/repeatability thing: My Sako, when new and with its Mannlicher stock, would always, repeat, always put the first shot exactly where I wanted it. If I let it cool back down all the way to the same temperature as that first shot, all well and good.

If I shot a "normal-rate" string, each shot was one inch higher than the preceding shot. My wise old uncle suggested checking the bedding. Hey, that Mannlicher stock was two-piece!

It became a slightly shortened one-piece stock. Ever since, that Sako on 7X has always been a sub-1/2 MOA rifle. The last time I "really tried" on a three-shot group, I could totally cover the three shots with a dime.

It's this sort of happening which leads me into "arguments" when such issues as the "needs" of "Sniper" or "Tactical" come up...I guess "need" is the word that upsets me.

Here I am, 67 years old, wear trifocals, got cigarette and coffee nerves, use a wooden benchrest with some homemade sandbags piled up...And these young, healthy guys "need" all this stuff?

Way OT

Well, Sam, if I had custody of bin Laden, he'd have no choice but to eat with his left hand and the only item on the menu would be pork.

It's a start.
