Smith & Wesson SemiAutos.

My 945 is a superb pistol and a good value. I have six 1911s but like the 945 best. It has been completely reliable.

S&W has excellent service. Unfortunately I have had to send in several guns over the years for warranty work. They have paid for shipping both ways and had a quick turnaround time. Their custom work is quite reasonable also. I know any company will turn out an occasionally flawed product, and S&W is no different. It's important to me to know that they stand behind their guns.

This is the gun that started me on S&W's, abeit this one is heavy on the custom side. I purchased this weapon just after the article in Shooting Times about the "new" .40 S&W cartridge. It is one of the first sold in my part of N.C.
I remember when the third generation Smiths came out. There was a lot of hype over them, most either loved them or hated them.
Most of the customization on this 4006 was forced. This handgun was the jammingest, malfuctioning piece of crap I ever bought until Cylinder and Slide fixed it. While I was waiting the 9+ months to ship it off to Cylinder and Slide we used it for training on malfunction clearance at the range as it would give some type of jam or malfunction at least twice in every 11 round mag.
Today it is one of the most reliable weapons I own and the most accurate.

I have six 3rd Generation Smith autos. 5906, 5943TSW, 3913TSW, 457, 4046, and 6906. All are stock (except for Hogue rubber grips on all except the 3913 and 6906 and night sights on the 457). None of them has ever jammed and I have never had the occasion to send one back to the factory. I have shot my 3913, 5943, and 6906 the most. What do I carry? Mostly a Glock 26. Occasionally my 6906. So, no, there's nothing wrong with Smith 3rd generation autos. My Glocks are preferred because they're a little lighter and I like the trigger a little better.

e'ville:

Are the mags for your 945 the same 8rd mags as used in the 645 and 45XX series pistols?

Riddle:

Very nice custom work.

My son-in-law has a 4006 that has shot perfectly since the first day. No FTF or misfeeds at all. I have shot it and was impressed.

agtman,

No, the mags are not the same. They are dimensionally the same but they have another cut in them to engage the magazine catch. Mags from the 945s will work in the 645 and 4506 styles but not vice versa. The mags that I've seen for the 945 have two cuts in them for the mag catch.

So far in this thread, for the people who had opinions, the tally is:

Neutral...........12
Unfavorable.....6
Favorable.......23

I have owned several Smith 3rd gen autos over the years and all functioned perfectly. I am particularly enamored of the DAOs. One in .40 Caliber is my house gun.

I think they are as well made as any Beretta or Sig. I agree that that straight backstrap that's stock on some is very uncomfortable. They're easy to replace, though.

S&W AUTOS

I own several S&W autos (10 mm 9mm and 45acp) It seems I shoot better with those than I do my sigs (p220 p229 p228).
Must be the weight, the S&W are heavier.

You can mark me down for the "favorable" category. I picked up this 1006 with a little work to it in a trade. I was hesitant to make the deal but this pistol has turned into one of, if not my favorite shooter.

Trigger job doesn't hurt:D

What is the opinion of the CS45? I have an oppotunity to pick one up but I'm leary re: quality, reliability & accuracy. This thread has got me thinking it might be a nice little gun.

Put me down as a satisfied S&W auto owner. I have had a CS45 for some time now and never had a problem with it.

In fact, I am needing to clean out the safe an have my CS45, plastic case, brush, lock, and 4 mags for sale (what a convienient spot to mention it ;) )

Asking $400.

I have owned two S&W's models-4516 and the3913. I think both guns were very well made, no jams, no misfires and very accurate. I am even thinking of buying a model-CS9. To give you an idea how I feel about the S&W autos, at this time I own a SIG-P239 I love this gun, but if I was to compare the 3913 to the P239 I would say they are very close in size, weight, accuracy and function.

The S/W 945 is great ..If it wasn't so high priced (for me) I would get it in a heartbeat..One of the most accurate I've ever tried, and it don't need any tune ups or parts to make it a shooter..

S&W autos

Why, oh why did I ever trade away my first 39-2? It had the best trigger of any DA/SA auto I've ever tried! Never malfed on me either. I was getting a sign of a little frame battering and that scared me some. I suppose all it really needed was a new recoil spring.

But I fell to the gunwriter's hype over the 'much improved' third generation S&W autos and the .40S&W hype at the same time. I sold off the 39 and picked up a 4006. 4006 is much heavier, being all steel, but doesn't feel as clunky as the earlier generation doublestack guns. I swapped out the original straight grip with a curved-backstrap factory grip and now it feels better. I also have a set of rubber Hogues that I use on occasion.

However, the trigger on the 4006 sucks in comparison with my old 39-2. I thought that this is where S&W spent a lot of research and development to improve the trigger feel. The 4006 trigger might as well have been stuck in cement. I had a local authorized S&W repair guy take a look at it and he did a little polishing here and there, and put in a ruduced hammer spring and trigger return spring. It feels better, but still not as smooth as the old 39.

It took me a while, but I found another 39-2 since the guy I sold my first one to couldn't be talked into selling my old one back to me. The 'new' 39-2 isn't as cosmetically nice as my first one, but it still works fine and yes, the trigger on the new 39-2 is still better than the 4006.

I have never had a malfunction with any one of the S&W autos I've owned. Ooops, make that one stovepipe with my first 39-2. That must have been a fluke. Out of the thousands of rounds I've put through each of them, they keep on ticking!
