Just wondering what all of you think with regards to current revolver designs.

What would be the better choice? Smith & Wesson or Ruger?

I like Ruger guns a LOT. As matter of fact, I happen to be one of the owners of Sturm Ruger & Co. (RGR) on the NYSE.

However, Ruger just does not make a light small pistol suitable for concealed carry (company policy). Perhaps if I owned more stock I could influence that decision.

So, with that in mind, it is like this: I buy Ruger pistols and rifles for all other purposes that concealed carry. When it comes to concealed carry, the Smith J frame is hard to beat.

NEITHER, Taurus has my vote for innovation today. I prefer S&W for the way the guns look stylewise, and Ruger for strength and SA's, Colt has dropped off the radar. Taurus has done some nice things with 45 colt and acp in a "K" frame size gun. and some nice carry guns. Taurus also has some nice big bore gunsa and some small bores i.e. the 218 bee, the 22 hornet and the 30 carbine. I agree that no one manufactuer is doing "Quality is JOB 1" right now. they all make some lemons

My vote goes to S&W but I do have to say that I own 2 Rugers; a .44 mag Redhawk and a .44 mag Vaquero, both excellent guns.
My S&W's are 3 in .357 and 1 in .38.

nice to see another ruger stockholder on the board

I currently own some shares(exactly 2) of ruger stock myself. Not much I know but it helps whn I request parts and servie from ruger to be ablw to sign the letter: stockholder (actually I just think it look cool<g>)
Any I find I like the older smiths all frame sizes over the newere ones. In other fields the rugers are hard to beat. Nobody makes a stronger DA 44 magnum revolver than the Super Redhawk.
And don't get me started on my SA Rugers.
Ruger if its new its whats in my safe!

Well, I own over a dozen of each, but the question is about current revolver design. For me, the best current design is Ruger. For one thing you can easily take down the double actions for cleaning and lubrication. No side plate to remove, no screws to mar. Then IMO Ruger makes a stronger gun in a smaller package. Ruger also makes a stronger gun in a bigger package. For me, the accurcacy is similar with individual guns shooter better than the group. I don't like the fact that Smith basically quit making blued guns. I have had better service from Ruger when I returned a gun for work (I have had work done by both places several times). Ruger does make a small concealable revolver in the SP-101 which I think is a practical design. Strong and up to the task of handling full bore .357 ammo.
For looks, for classic treasures, I go with Smith. For current design and innovation, it is Ruger, hands down.

Luckily, we don`t have to pick just one....I like Smiths a lot, and they`re a local company ( I`m in MA). I also like the .454 and .480 cartridges a lot. So how do you pick one over the other?

My heart says Smith.
My head and my vote go Ruger.

444 nailed it.

The Smith basic design is a bit outdated. (No knock intended)
No way, no how can the Smith design handle sustained heavy loads. There's numerous threads dealing with Smiths running out of "gun" before the load runs out of "zap".

Every SA revolver I own is a Ruger.

I own one Taurus DA, but it does not compare in quality of trigger/action to the four S&W DA's I own. So for DA, the winner is S&W. SA Ruger gets my vote.

:D

Geez. Otay, Smith's are different from Rugers, and vice versa, with their strong points and weak points. That said, I do have more Smith's than Rugers.;)
